Countdown to Michigan at Ohio State: Both teams have problems
CBS Sports will provide an update on the biggest rivalries in the country every week. This week, we look at who has a leg up entering the Michigan-Ohio State game on Nov. 29.

The 110th meeting between Michigan and Ohio State will take place Nov. 29 (Michigan leads the series 58-45-6 but has lost 10 of the last 12). As the two programs move toward rivalry week, we take a weekly look at current trends, and the current state of hostilities, between the Wolverines and Buckeyes.
Days until game: 31
Michigan last week: The Wolverines were back on the wrong end of things, losing to in-state rival Michigan State 35-11 in East Lansing.
Ohio State last week: The Buckeyes struggled in a game for the first time since the loss to Virginia Tech, but were able to pull off a 31-24 double-overtime win at Penn State.
2014 Michigan-Ohio State Power Index: 1. Ohio State, 2. Michigan
Michigan this week: vs. Indiana, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (Michigan -9)
Ohio State this week: vs. Illinois, Saturday, 8 p.m. ET (Ohio State -28.5)
Michigan storyline: At this point the rest of the 2014 season just feels like a month-long funeral procession for the Wolverines. After losing to Michigan State the Wolverines dropped to 3-5 on the season, which means they have to win three of their final four games to qualify for a bowl appearance. Now, with the rest of the schedule Michigan faces, that's not an impossible task, but you have to wonder if Michigan fans would even want to go to a bowl this season. They'd probably just prefer the season ended.
Ohio State storyline: There's definitely some concern with J.T. Barrett's sprained MCL, but the biggest news of the week for the Buckeyes was the No. 16 ranking they received in the first College Football Playoff Top 25. Ohio State is only the third-highest ranked team in the Big Ten, as it's a spot behind Nebraska. Now, things can change quickly. Should Ohio State knock off Michigan State in a few weeks it'd certainly help its standing, but you have to wonder if that would be enough. Realistically the Buckeyes not only need to win out, but they're going to need a few other teams to lose to have a shot at a playoff berth this year.
Moment in Hatestory: Nov. 22, 1969
This was the game that began The Ten Year War between Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes. It was Schembechler's first season at Michigan after he'd spent the previous six seasons as coach at Miami (Ohio). Before that, though, Schembechler had been an assistant under Hayes at Ohio State.
He would not treat his old boss very well in this first meeting.
Ohio State entered the game undefeated and it had been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll for the entire season. Michigan was 8-2 and ranked No. 12. At the time the media was calling Ohio State the "greatest college football team of all time," and Hayes himself would say that the 1969 team was the best he'd ever coached. But it wasn't the best team on the field that Saturday.
The game started with an Ohio State drive that reached the red zone, but a failed fourth-and-two put an end to it. The Buckeyes would then force a Michigan punt on the next drive, and it was the last punt either team would need for a while. Ohio State drove right back down the field again, but this time it reached the end zone, even if a failed extra point left the score at 6-0.
Michigan's Glenn Doughty would return the ensuing kickoff to the Michigan 44, and the Wolverines took advantage of the field position, putting together a touchdown drive to take a 7-6 lead.
It was the first time Ohio State had trailed all season.
Ohio State would not trail long, however. The Buckeyes marched right back down the field and scored again, but this time on the extra point attempt Michigan would be called for offsides, prompting Woody Hayes to go for two. The conversion would fail, leaving Ohio State with a 12-7 lead.
A lead that wouldn't last very long.
Michigan scored on its next drive as well, thanks in large part to a 28-yard run by Billy Taylor that gave Michigan a first-and-goal at the Ohio State 5-yard line. Michigan was now up 14-12, and it would never relinquish the lead.
In fact, it would take on another 10 points before halftime to take a 24-12 lead, and that's where the score would remain. The second half was a series of Ohio State turnovers, and missed Michigan field goals.
By the time the game ended, Ohio State had turned the ball over seven times and Bo Schembechler would be carried off on the shoulders of his players.
