Friday Night Lights are coming to the Big Ten starting in the 2017 season
The Big Ten is finally joining many other conferences with Friday games after Labor Day weekend
The newest detail of the Big Ten's home-run media rights agreement with ESPN and Fox from this summer has come forward. And the Big Ten is officially joining Friday night college football in 2017.
Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told the Chicago Tribune that six prime-time games -- two during the Labor Day weekend and four during September and October -- would be played next season. The games are part of an increase in prime-time games and a quest for further exposure.
"All things considered, we thought it was worthwhile to dip our toe in the water," Delany told the Tribune.
Land of 10 added that the six Friday games are part of an 18-game prime-time slate the Big Ten and its media rights partners are rolling out for the 2017 season. The exact schedule is expected to be released some time within the next week.
While Delany said that no team will play on Friday night more than twice, it's possible not all Big Ten members participate:
Delany said the league is reluctant to ask schools with giant seating capacities to host Friday night games, so don't expect games to be played at Ohio State or Penn State.
And Michigan is flat-out saying no to Friday night games, both home and road. Delany said he believes the school simply prefers Saturday games for "consistency of presentation."
The Big Ten has previously stayed away from Friday night games past Labor Day weekend, but Delany noted that college football Saturdays have become too saturated with games. And with the Big Ten sitting as the richest conference in college athletics, there are some demands to push the product in more nontraditional ways.
Friday night games this season have included teams from the ACC, American, Mountain West, Pac-12 and SEC, among others.
