Florida at Tennesee highlights: Vols exorcise demons, blast Gators in second-half rout
Tennessee had lost 11 straight to Florida and was poised to drop another until it turned things around
No. 19 Florida ran out to a 21-0 first half lead against No. 14 Tennessee and appeared poised to extend its win streak over the Volunteers to 12 games.
However, following a field goal late in the second quarter to end the shutout, Tennessee stormed ahead in the second half and shut the door on its visitors. The Vols rode a tremendous rally by quarterback Josh Dobbs and a phenomenal defensive performance to a 38-0 run that allowed it to take the lead for good.
Dobbs finished the game 16-of-32 passing for 316 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions -- setting career-highs for yards and touchdown passes in a game. Three of those touchdowns came in a run where the Vols ripped off 21 points in less than five minutes of game time as Dobbs hooked up with Ethan Wolf, Jauan Jennings and Josh Malone for touchdowns over that stretch to end the third quarter and start the fourth.
While the offense found its rhythm in the second half, the Tennessee defense locked down completely on the Florida offense. The Gators were without a first down for the first 22 minutes of the second half, with five three-and-outs and an interception in their first six drives coming out of the locker rooms. The Gators had only 102 total yards in the second half with most coming on their lone touchdown drive of the half in the fourth quarter while down 17.
Tennessee was able to shake off its issues with both Florida and fourth quarters of close games on Saturday. For once, the Vols put it in the hands of Dobbs and the passing attack in the second half, and he delivered with a scintillating performance.
The 11-game losing streak is over and the Vols now look to be firmly in control of the SEC East by handing Florida its first loss, especially considering that No. 12 Georgia was upended 45-14 at Ole Miss earlier Saturday afternoon.
Thanks for stopping by.
