South Carolina axes Darrin Horn as head coach
South Carolina had determined that Darrin Horn will not continue as its men's basketball coach, a source confirmed to CBSSports.com on Tuesday.
An official announcement is expected at 1:30 p.m. today. Horn spent four seasons at South Carolina after a five-year stint at Western Kentucky that culminated with a trip to the Sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA tournament. The notoriety gained from that one season -- really, just those two weeks in early March -- made Horn an attractive candidate at South Carolina, but he was never able to take the Gamecocks to the NCAA tournament.
He finished with a losing record in the SEC in three of his four years. South Carolina was 10-21 overall, 2-14 in the league in this season that ended with Thursday's 63-57 loss to Alabama in the first round of the SEC tournament in New Orleans. That was the Gamecocks' sixth straight loss and 11th in their final 12 contests.
Wichita State's Gregg Marshall is a possible candidate to replace Horn, but it's unclear whether he'd be willing to leave one of the Missouri Valley Conference's best programs for one of the SEC's worst. Either way, Marshall won't be available for at least another week. The Shockers won the MVC this season and play VCU Thursday in the Round of 64 in the NCAA tournament.
