Virginia Tech at Maryland

Maryland 73, Virginia Tech 69
  •

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Terrell Stoglin scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half, and Maryland never trailed in a 73-69 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over slumping Virginia Tech on Saturday.

Sean Mosley had 15 points for the Terrapins (13-7, 3-3), who snapped a three-game skid. Maryland let a 15-point cushion dwindle to two with five seconds left, but Stoglin made two foul shots with 3.6 seconds remaining to secure the win.

It was the sixth loss in seven games for the Hokies (12-9, 1-5), who fell into a last-place tie with Georgia Tech. Erick Green led Virginia Tech with 18 points, and Dorenzo Hudson and Victor Davila each scored 14.

The Hokies are 10-28 all-time against the Terrapins, including 4-17 on the road.

Maryland led 36-21 early in the second half before Hudson drilled two straight 3-pointers to ignite a 13-4 spree that got Virginia Tech to 40-34. Stoglin then connected from beyond the arc, and after Mosley stole the ball on the other end, Stoglin again hit from long range to put the Terps up by 12.

Virginia Tech again came back. Jarell Eddie made a 3-pointer, a three-point play and two foul shots in a 7-1 spree that made it 51-44.

Stoglin followed with a 3-pointer, and minutes later he sank two free throws for a 58-46 lead with 6 minutes to go.

The Hokies got to 60-55 with three minutes left, but a 3-pointer by Stoglin - along with three free throws by Mosley with 1:09 left - momentarily short-circuited the comeback.

The Terrapins limited Virginia Tech to 6-for-25 shooting in taking a 32-19 halftime lead.

Maryland scored the game's first five points and went up 13-6 lead before the Hokies got a 3-pointer by Green, who kept Virginia Tech close by scoring eight points in the opening seven minutes.

It was 16-11 before Maryland's Nick Faust made two free throws and dunk in an 8-0 run that put the Terps up by 13. The Hokies then made successive baskets for the first time, the second a layup by Davila with 6:26 left.

That would be Virginia Tech's final field goal before halftime. The 19 points were the fewest scored by the Hokies in a half this season.
