Marist vs Providence

Providence routs Marist 93-48

  •

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Bryce Cotton scored 28 points and dished out a career-high 11 assists and undefeated Providence cruised to a 93-48 non-conference rout of winless Marist Saturday.

The win was the Friars' 29th straight home victory over a non-conference opponent - a new school high since the formation of the Big East in 1979-80.

Kadeem Batts added 22 points and 10 rebounds and LaDontae Hinton 21 points and eight boards for the Friars (3-0). Cotton, a pre-season All-Big East pick, also had five rebounds and was 11-for-11 from the foul line.

Ty Harris added 13 points and five rebounds in the win, while Khalid Hart had 21 points for the Red Foxes (0-4), 16 in the second half.

Providence hit eight 3-pointers - three by Henton - and was 21-for-25 from the foul line, where the Friars hit their first 19 before the bench was cleared.

It was Providence's largest win since Feb. 22, 2001, when the Friars beat Binghamton 119-58.

Batts, preseason honorable mention in his conference, scored 11 points and Cotton 10 during the first-half explosion that saw the Friars hold the Red Foxes without a field goal for 12 minutes.

Marist led 6-4 3:26 into the game but then couldn't score as the Friars ran wild.

Providence had nine steals in a first half that saw Marist, which turned the ball over 12 times in the half, shoot just 6-for-25 from the floor - and that was with the Red Foxes hitting their last two attempts.

The Friars shot 19-for-34 in the opening 20 minutes. They then opened the second half with a 9-0 burst to lead by 39. The lead grew to 51 in the second half.

Batts started the run with a basket that tied the score at 6-6 before Cotton, a preseason All-Big East selection, drained a 3-pointer and then stole the ball and slammed it home at the other end. The rout was on.

Henton had eight points during the rally, hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

By the time the Foxes scored again, it was 41-8 and they actually outscored the Friars 9-6 over the final 4:30 of the first half to trail by 30 at the break.

Hart managed to make things a bit more respectable in the second half - but not much, as the Red Foxes remained winless for new coach Jeff Bower.

Marist was picked to finish fifth in the MAAC, with both Adam Kemp and Chevaughn Lewis both tabbed preseason second team All-League. Kemp had eight points and five rebounds and Lewis four points on 3-for-14 shooting.
