Seton Hall vs Providence

Gibbs, Seton Hall upend Providence, 81-80 in 2OT

  •

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Seton Hall rebounded from letting a 12-point second-half lead slip away to defeat Providence in double overtime, 81-80, on Tuesday in the Big East opener for both teams.

Sterling Gibbs provided the deciding points as the sophomore swished two free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining in the second OT. Out of timeouts, PC's last chance died at halfcourt when Tyler Harris was called for traveling.

Brian Oliver led the Pirates (10-4) with 18 points and five rebounds while Brandon Mobley had 16 points. Gibbs supplied 15 points off the bench for Seton Hall, now winners of three straight.

PC's Bryce Cotton played all 50 minutes and led all scorers with 25 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Harris had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Friars (10-4).

The Pirates were up a dozen points with 12:45 remaining in regulation, but PC was able to come all the back and force what ended up 10 minutes of additional action. LaDontae Henton scored on a drive with 33.6 seconds left to tie the game at 58-all.

The game featured 43 fouls, 11 ties and 16 lead changes.

As expected, Seton Hall took the floor minus Eugene Teague. The redshirt senior suffered a concussion during the second half of the Pirates' home game against Lafayette. Teague was averaging 10.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest.

Seton Hall's win over Providence marks the end of the Friars' 13-game winning streak at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. PC's last home loss was to Connecticut on Jan. 31, 2013.

This was the 93rd all-time meeting between two of the founding members of the Big East Conference. Providence leads the series, 47-46. The Friars have lost eight of their last nine overtime contests.
