Kratz was designated for assignment Tuesday.
With the Pirates in need of 40-man space, Kratz was DFA'd and he'll now be subject to waivers. If he passes through unclaimed, then he'll likely wind up at Triple-A Indianapolis after making 18 appearances for the big league club on the season.
