The Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor boxing match rumor will not go away and that's because Mayweather won't stop talking about it, insisting it's a legitimate possibility for his return.

On Friday night's ShoBox card, promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Mayweather spoke with Showtime's Steve Farhood about the potential boxing match with the UFC star and insisted that it's a real discussion and even said he "absolutely" thinks the fight will happen.

"Well, it's really not a rumor," said Mayweather. "The fight may happen. You know, we really don't know as of right now. But do I think the fight will happen? Absolutely."

Farhood then asked if it would be a boxing match should the two meet in the ring.

"We're the A-side [of the promotion], of course, so it has to be a boxing match because most fights that Conor McGregor won inside the Octagon, he was a stand up guy," said Mayweather. "So, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a tough fight for me. We don't really know as of right now, but it's been a lot of talk and hopefully we can make the fight happen."

There's no reason to believe Mayweather is outright lying when saying there's discussion about a potential fight, but there's still plenty of skepticism that McGregor would be willing to step in for a boxing match -- or be allowed to by UFC depending on his contract -- against Mayweather.

As for Mayweather's "it would be a tough fight" talk, there are very few that believe that statement, but that's been how Floyd has promoted all of his fights. He focuses on how dangerous the opponent is to make the fight intriguing -- like he did with Andre Berto -- and also to make him look all the more impressive when he dominates and is impossible to hit.

As for UFC's stance on the whole thing? UFC president Dana White called it "impossible," though he did invite Mayweather to step into the octagon any time he wants.
