SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Thunderstorms arrived at 2:15 p.m. ET Saturday at Baltusrol Golf Club and never relented, forcing a delay and then suspension of the third round before the final five groups were able to tee off at the 2016 PGA Championship.

Rain was always in the forecast for the weekend. After dodging disaster Friday morning with only a 45-minute delay of the second round, the PGA was not as lucky Saturday as only 37 of the 86 players to make the cut finishing their third round play before the delay began.

The PGA will attempt to resume play on Sunday at 7 a.m. ET, but the forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms overnight and throughout the day on Sunday. Hope is that Round 4 action can begin at 8:40 a.m. with the current top of the leaderboard attempting to go off at 3:25 p.m.

Saturday's pairings will carry over into both rounds on Sunday. Of course, rain remains in the forecast for Sunday, so it's unlikely these planned times are all met.

That will make it difficult to finish the third round on Sunday, much less squeeze in 36 holes for the leaders.

As happened in 2005, a PGA Championship at Baltusrol will likely continue into Monday -- we say "continue" because there is the possibility for rain to fall Monday afternoon with the tournament finishing on Tuesday.

Robert Streb and Jimmy Walker (9 under) lead the field with Jason Day (7 under), Henrik Stenson (6 under) and a bevy of other stars all threatening.
