Dustin Johnson joins Spieth, Day, McIlroy as co-favorite for British Open
Move over Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth because you have some company
There is another big name joining the Big Three atop the British Open odds this week. This is how it always should have been since Dustin Johnson won the U.S. Open, but it took him winning the Bridgestone Invitational as well to make it happen. Johnson joined Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth as an 8-1 favorite to win at Royal Troon.
Here is a look at all the odds for the 2016 British Open (via Bovada).
Favorites
- Rory McIlroy: 8-1
- Jordan Spieth: 8-1
- Dustin Johnson: 8-1
- Jason Day: 8-1
That is quite a list. If I had to bet my life on it, I would probably take Day. I still trust him more than the other three right now (even though he blew the Bridgestone Invitational). Also, Johnson has not had a top 10 in four years.
Other favorites
- Adam Scott: 22-1
- Rickie Fowler: 28-1
- Justin Rose: 28-1
- Sergio Garcia: 28-1
- Branden Grace: 28-1
- Henrik Stenson: 28-1
Scott is one of only three golfers to make the cut in each of the last five British Opens. He also has the best average finish of anyone who made three or more in that time (9th). He's tasty at 22-1. Also, the golfer who has the second-best average finish in that time is Sergio Garcia. Even tastier at 28-1.
Fringe favorites
- Shane Lowry: 33-1
- Louis Oosthuizen: 35-1
- Phil Mickelson: 35-1
- Hideki Matsuyama: 40-1
- Bubba Watson: 40-1
- Martin Kaymer: 40-1
- Brooks Koepka: 40-1
- Lee Westwood: 40-1
I love Koepka here. I also love Westwood. Which means both will miss the cut.
Longshots
- Paul Casey: 50-1
- Patrick Reed: 50-1
- Zach Johnson: 50-1
- Jim Furyk: 50-1
- Matthew Fitzpatrick: 50-1
- Graeme McDowell: 66-1
- Jimmy Walker: 66-1
- Justin Thomas: 66-1
- Matt Kuchar: 66-1
- Marc Leishman: 66-1
Johnson is the third player (besides D.J. and Scott) to make each of the last five Open cuts. He has finishes of first, sixth, ninth and 16th in that span. What am I missing?
