Dustin Johnson withdraws from Houston Open after winning WGC-Dell Match Play
The final tournament before the Masters lost its best player on Monday
Dustin Johnson withdrew from the 2017 Shell Houston Open on Monday after a marathon 112 holes of golf last week at the WGC-Dell Match Play. Who can blame him? With the Masters on deck and seven grueling matches behind him, the No. 1 golfer in the world needed a little rest.
“I’m very pleased with my play this week,” Johnson said after his win on Sunday. “And it was a long week. A lot longer match this afternoon (against Jon Rahm) than I would have liked it to have been. But Jon was a great competitor and it was a great match.”
Johnson was noncommittal at the time about playing in Houston where it is presumed he would have gotten some prep work in for the Masters. Work he probably doesn’t need given the fact that he has won three events in a row.
“I don’t know (if I’m going to play Houston)“ Johnson said on Sunday night. “Ask me that in the morning when I wake up. But as of right now, I’m playing and I’m planning on going there. But I’ll probably -- I’ll get there Tuesday night, I would imagine, if I’m going to go. But, yeah, as of right now I’m planning on being there.”
He’s not planning on it any longer, and now Johnson will head for Augusta National looking to do what only Tiger Woods has done since 1980, win four PGA Tour tournaments in a row.
