Inside the Numbers: U.S. Open course Oakmont will test golfers' mettle
If you go by past champions and total scores, Oakmont is a tough track to beat and will be difficult sledding at the 2016 U.S. Open
There will be a lot of numbers this week at Oakmont for the U.S. Open. A lot of large numbers. As in a lot of large scores. The inflated rounds will surely fascinate, but there's a lot to know about Oakmont going into this year's event.
Let's go inside some numbers leading up to the 2016 U.S. Open.
9 -- Over par is the cumulative score of the eight previous winners of the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
5 -- Golfers have made the cut at each of the last five U.S. Opens: Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, Jason Day, Webb Simpson and Phil Mickelson.
23 -- Golfers have finished under par at U.S. Opens at Oakmont. Eight of those came at the 1994 U.S. Open. Nine more came in 1973. That's a pretty crazy number. An average of fewer than three per tournament.
220 -- Combined PGA Tour wins by the eight men who have won U.S. Opens at Oakmont. That's 27.5 each on average. This is a big boy track.
0 -- Finishes outside the top five for Jordan Spieth in his last five majors. Remember that when you have no idea how he's contending on Sunday with his D+ game.
