Open Championship 2017 odds: Jon Rahm joins the favorites to win the title
Only Dustin Johnson has better odds than Rahm at this year's British Open
You knew Jon Rahm's odds for the 2017 Open Championship would improve after winning the Irish Open, but you didn't know they would improve this much. Rahm is now a 12-1 favorite to win at Royal Birkdale next week which is second to only Dustin Johnson at 10-1, according to the Westgate Superbook.
Rahm, who was 25-1 to win The Open as recently as July 3, couldn't believe his blowout win last week at Portstewart Golf Club, which is a links course and doesn't necessarily suit his game that well.
"I've learned what I'm capable of and hopefully I'm going to go to that week trying to replicate a lot of things that I've done this week, and be as patient, as calm as I've been, and enjoy the week," Rahm said. "I know I can play good links golf and I'm going to try to enjoy it as much as I can."
Here's a look at the favorites for Royal Birkdale.
The favorites
- Dustin Johnson: 8-1
- Jordan Spieth: 10-1
- Jon Rahm: 12-1
Rahm is fun to talk about here, but I don't think he's a great bet. I do love Spieth at 10-1, though. I think he's going to be a factor all week, and I think he's going to win multiple Opens in his career.
The other favorites
- Rory McIlroy: 15-1
- Sergio Garcia: 15-1
- Rickie Fowler: 15-1
- Justin Rose: 15-1
I love Fowler here. Love him! You could talk me into betting Fowler at 10-1 with the way he's playing right now and with the way he plays Opens. Rose also played well last week at the Irish Open though he's not had much Open Championship success in his career.
The fringe favorites
- Jason Day: 20-1
- Hideki Matsuyama: 20-1
- Tommy Fleetwood: 20-1
Fleetwood at 20-1 is tasty. So is Matsuyama. Day not so much, especially if it's windy at Royal Birkdale. Johnny Miller recently noted how if you get wayward at this course, it can go very badly. Guys like Day (and Rory McIlroy) can get wayward off the tee with no chance to recover.
