Day 2 of the 2016 Ryder Cup was a wild one that saw Europe briefly pull even with the United States before the Americans rebounded and pulled away to go up 9.5-6.5 entering the event's final day.

The United States and Europe played an incredible morning session of foursomes, which included lights-out performances from Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters for Europe and Brooks Koepka and Brandt Snedeker for the U.S.

Europe took two matches while the United States won one, and the teams halved another after a furious comeback by Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello to square Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth. That tightened the United States' lead down to 6.5-5.5 going into the afternoon four-ball session.

In the afternoon, McIlroy and Pieters ran out to a big lead on Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka to give Europe early momentum. While they held on for a 3&1 victory in the first match, the rest of the United States' squad rallied in the final three groups.

The leader of the rally was Patrick Reed, who produced massive roars all day, most notably following his eagle hole out on No. 6. Reed carried Jordan Spieth to a 2&1 win over the dynamic European duo of Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose in the final match.

In the middle two matches of the afternoon session, the American duos of Holmes-Moore and Mickelson-Kuchar were able to earn victories as well to push the United States lead to 9.5-6.5 going into the singles matches on Sunday.

The three-point lead means that the United States needs five points in the 12 singles matches on Sunday to take home the cup for the first time since 2008.
