Ryder Cup star Thomas Pieters among 12 golfers added to 2017 Masters field
The 2017 Masters is already starting to take shape, and it will include some new faces
There are 18 different qualifications to receive an invitation to the Masters. This week, 12 golfers will get into the 2017 Masters via qualification No. 17, which is the top 50 on the Official World Golf Rankings at the end of the previous year. The final Official World Golf Rankings of 2016 came out this week.
Here are those golfers in order of how they are currently ranked on the OWGR.
- Alex Noren (No. 9)
- Tyrell Hatton (No. 24)
- Louis Oosthuizen (No. 26)
- Rafael Cabrera-Bello (No. 27)
- Francesco Molinari (No. 31)
- Yuta Ikeda (No. 33)
- Chris Wood (No. 39)
- Bernd Wiesberger (No. 40)
- Bill Haas (No. 41)
- Andy Sullivan (No. 44)
- Ben An (No. 45)
- Thomas Pieters (N0. 47)
Noren's star bloomed on the European Tour this year and he surged into the top 10 in the world by the end of the season. Cabrera-Bello, Wood, Sullivan and Pieters all played on the European Ryder Cup team for the first time.
This brings the current invite total to 84 with several spots still to be filled out. Golfers can qualify by winning a tournament on the PGA Tour between now and the Masters in April. They can also qualify by getting into the top 50 in the OWGR by the week prior to the Masters.
No Masters since 1966 has had over 100 invitees. That one had 103.
