The weather wrecked havoc on Thursday's opening round of the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club as only nine players were able to complete their round before play was officially suspended for the day due to inclement weather.

With so much talk about how difficult the set up would be at Oakmont this week, early Thursday morning provided players with the best possible conditions until storms rolled through beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The greens and fairways softened up, letting golfers be more aggressive off the tee and with approaches, and they were taking advantage early on.

However, as the round wore on, winds picked up and multiple stoppages to play disrupted players rhythm, the course began to show its teeth. At the time play was suspended for the rest of the day, seven players were under par with only one of the nine in the clubhouse in red figures -- amateur Scottie Scheffler.

At the time of stoppage on Thursday, here is how the leaderboard stands with half of the field still yet to tee off.

Leaders

1. Andrew Landry (-3, 17*): Landry is the stunner of the first round. The U.S. Open rookie looked like a grizzled veteran with the way he picked apart Oakmont on Thursday. He was 5-under at point point on his second nine with a chance to flirt with Johnny Miller's record score of 63 at Oakmont. He did end up dropping two strokes late in his round but has a 10-footer for birdie to post a tremendous 66 when he resumes play on Friday.

T2. Bubba Watson (-2, 14): Watson isn't usually a good U.S. Open player, but he sure seems to enjoy Oakmont. He finished T5 back in 2007 and is playing quite well again after 14 holes of his first round.

T2. Danny Lee (-2, 13): Not only is Lee at 2 under for his round through 13 holes, but he's yet to make a bogey. That is an unbelievable accomplishment at Oakmont.

T4. Scottie Scheffler (a) (-1, F): If it weren't for Landry, we'd be talking about the amateur's fantastic showing on Thursday. The Texas Longhorn had bookend bogeys on his round, but three birdies in the middle has him in red figures going into the second round. He also has the benefit of not having to finish his first round on Friday thanks to a 6:45 a.m. tee time, so he can sit back and relax a bit tonight without thinking about coming back to the course in the middle of a round.

T4 at -1: Kevin Streelman (16*), Lee Westwood (13*), Harris English (12*)

T8 at E: Romain Wattel (15), Gregory Bourdy (16*), Daniel Berger (15), Matthew Fitzpatrick (13), Martin Kaymer (13*), Russell Knox (12*), Shane Lowry (11), Zach Johnson (11)

Other Notables

T16. Bryson DeChambeau (+1, 11*): He was 3 under after eight holes but back-to-back double bogeys at 18 and 1 dropped him back to black figures. The delay might be good for him as he can regroup and try to get his focus back for his final seven holes.

T16. Jordan Spieth (+1, 11*): It was a grind for Spieth, but he's still hanging around at 1 over. He knows as well as anyone that the U.S. Open is about playing the long game and being patient, so he'll be fine with his performance so far.

T38. Rory McIlroy (+4, 13): A guy that needs to find something in this off time is McIlroy. He looked off from the start of his round and never appeared comfortable with how he should attack Oakmont, even in the softer conditions.

T56. Rickie Fowler (+6, 12): Another opening round disaster is in the works for Mr. Fowler. He could not get anything going on Thursday and, like at the Masters, looks like he could be playing catch up on Friday just to see the weekend.
