WATCH: Golfer has ice in veins, sinks 40-foot putt to punch ticket to the U.S. Open
Chris Crawford, formerly of Drexel, made a dream come true on Monday at sectional qualifying
Let me set the stage for you here. Former Drexel Dragon Chris Crawford was just coming off his senior year and contending for one of six spots to get into the U.S. Open via sectional qualifying in Summit, New Jersey, on Monday. He shot a lights-out 65 in the morning session and knew he would only have to be around par in the afternoon to make it to Oakmont.
Crawford missed a three-foot par putt on the 35th hole of the day that put him on the line for a playoff to get in. Then he banged home this 40-footer at the last for birdie and a ticket to Oakmont next week.
"Can't leave it short to get to the Open," said Crawford. "After that I don't really remember. It went. I looked up and the ball was halfway there, and it looked like it was on a good line. I was just hoping it would catch the left edge and disappear. This is a dream come true. It's the U.S. Open. It's an unbelievable moment."
Golf, man. My favorite part is his caddie's reaction on the phone. This is not real!
This is no small thing either. Crawford is incredibly unlikely to win the tournament, but two of the last 11 U.S. Open champions have come out of sectional qualifying. So you never know. Either way, he has himself a memory that will last the rest of his life. The 40-foot putt he canned to go to the U.S. Open.
