WATCH: Justin Rose recreates his famous 1998 Open shot at Royal Birkdale
A T4 in 1998 at Royal Birkdale jump-started Justin Rose's career
In 1998, Justin Rose played the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as an amateur. He shot a 69 in the final round that year and finished T4, two shots out of playoff between Mark O'Meara and Brian Watts. Tiger Woods finished third. It remains Rose's best finish at an Open and was his only top 10 until he finished T6 in 2015.
"At the beginning of my week all I wanted was to be a part of it all," Rose said at the time. "I didn't realize I would be such a big part of it, almost getting the feel of being the winning player coming up the 18th. That's how I felt today."
The deneoument was a chill-inducing chip-in on the 72nd hole for the 69.
Rose went on to turn pro and miss 21 cuts in a row. He's obviously improved since then and won a U.S. Open, but that was a stark reminder that professional golf is not as easy as kids make it look.
This week, playing a practice round at Royal Birkdale to prepare for the 2017 Open, Rose re-created the shot. It didn't go in, but it was a cool reminder of what the kid did back in 1998.
Rose finished T70 here in 2008.
