The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2 against the Orioles Monday night on a Robinson Cano RBI double. It would have been 0-0 as a relay throw beat Ichiro Suzuki home by a mile, but Ichiro had other ideas.
Check it out:
Multiple camera-angle replays showed that Ichiro did indeed avoid Wieters' tag twice before getting his hand on home plate.
Also of note: Notorious umpire Angel Hernandez was the one who made the correct call.
As for the inevitable questions about whether or not Ichiro was out of the baseline, here is the rule (7.08):
Any runner is out when he runs more than three feet away from his base path to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball. A runner's base path is established when the tag attempt occurs and is a straight line from the runner to the base he is attempting to reach safely.
