NL Rookie of the Year: Harper edges out Miley | Is Trout the best rookie ever?

And your winner of the 2012 Jackie Robinson Award for American League Rookie of the Year is ... Mike Trout of the Angels.

Consider his selection evidence of a genius for the obvious on the part of the voters. This season, the rookie center fielder, who didn't turn 21 until August, batted .326/.399/.564 with 30 homers and a majors-leading 49 steals against just five times caught. Trout also paced the majors in runs scored and the AL in OPS+. That's in addition to providing Gold Glove-caliber defense in center. In other words, no arguments allowed.

The voting writers would seem to agree. Here, courtesy of the BBWAA, is the balloting break-down ...

And the individual ballots ...

As you can see, Trout was a unanimous choice -- the eighth unanimous choice in the history of the AL balloting. He also becomes the youngest Rookie of the Year in AL history.

By any standard, Trout's was one of the finest rookie seasons in the annals of the game. And unlike so many other years (Bob Hamelin! Joe Charboneau!), Trout's selection seems a sign of his greatness to come.
