Spring training injury update: Derek Jeter close to returning to lineup
The Cardinals lost SS Rafael Furcal for the season Thursday due to Tommy John surgery, a procedure that will take place next Wednesday according to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Furcal is hoping to return in time to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Here are the rest of Friday's injury updates:
- Braves: C Brian McCann will do his first back-to-back days of hitting and throwing this weekend. He had shoulder surgery this offseason and is limited to two sets of 20 throws at 120 feet. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
- Brewers: In addition to OF Corey Hart's clean MRI, 1B Mat Gamel has successful surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He will miss the rest of the season. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
- Cardinals: Both 3B David Freese (bruised tailbone) and 1B Allen Craig (sore shoulder) returned to the lineup on Friday. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
- Cubs: RHP Scott Baker threw two innings in a simulated game on Friday. He's returning from Tommy John surgery. (Chicago Sun-Times)
- Rays: OF Sam Fuld said he should be able to return from his right hamstring problem by the end of next week. "I'm feeling better. I'm not overly concerned," he said. (Tampa Tribune)
- Red Sox: SS Stephen Drew is dealing with mild concussion symptoms stemming from Thursday's hit-by-pitch. He was scratched from Friday's game and is expected to miss a few days. (CSNNE.com)
- Tigers: IF Ramon Santiago made his spring training debut on Friday. He had been battling a calf injury. (Detroit News)
- Yankees: SS Derek Jeter could get into a game this weekend for the first time since having surgery on his left ankle in late October. (New York Post)
