David Ross still considering his future, which could include the Cubs' front office
Ross retired earlier this offseason after helping the Cubs win their first title in 108 years
David Ross was one of the most popular members of last season's Chicago Cubs team. His grandfatherly demeanor made him a clubhouse and bleacher-seat favorite.
As such, folks might be curious what retirement holds for Ross.
We already know he is penning a book. But it sounds like Ross could be back with the Cubs sooner than later -- albeit in a non-playing role, CSN Chicago reports:
"I'm still going to stay in baseball," Ross said. "I feel like I'm connected to the Cubs for life - or (at least) I want to be. For me to not take advantage of the knowledge that front office has would be naïve.
"There's a lot of Hall of Famers in that front office. And I want to get to know that side of things. So, yeah, I'm sure there's something that's going to work out in the future with the Cubs.
"But I have a lot of other commitments and things I want to do (while trying) to get a life after baseball where I keep my foot in the door some way."
The Cubs for their part say they would love to have him stick around:
"There's definitely interest on our part," general manager Jed Hoyer said during last week's winter meetings. "It would seem almost a shame if he wasn't (around). He was such a big part of what we did from a team-chemistry standpoint.
Ross acknowledges he has a few different options to discuss with his family -- and that he has been waiting for the perfect time to have those conversations. That's usually coded language for "I'm going to take another job that requires me to spend time at the ballpark." The Cubs certainly seem open to it, and Ross does, too.
We'll just have to see if Ross will add another new role besides "author" to his business card this offseason, or if he'll take a year off before beginning his post-playing career in baseball.
