WATCH: David Ortiz sets single-season HR record by a player aged 40 or older
Ortiz added another accomplishment to his long list
Red Sox legend David Ortiz is now less than two weeks away from playing in his final regular-season game. But that didn't stop him from making some history on Monday night.
That's because Ortiz connected for his 35th home run -- this a two-run shot off Orioles righty Dylan Bundy -- which set a new single-season record. Here's the visual:
What record did Ortiz set? The most home runs in a season by a player aged 40 or older. Previously Darrell Evans owned that crown -- and had since 1987. Evans' mark had, for the most part, gone unchallenged, even during the steroid era. Before Ortiz, Raul Ibanez's 29-homer effort in 2013 was the only time someone had came within five long ones of Evans:
| Player | Season | Age | HR |
| David Ortiz | 2016 | 40 | 35 |
| Darrell Evans | 1987 | 40 | 34 |
| Raul Ibanez | 2013 | 41 | 29 |
| Ted Williams | 1960 | 41 | 29 |
| Barry Bonds | 2007 | 42 | 28 |
Of course, Ortiz isn't just having an impressive season relative to his age. He entered Monday hitting .317/.403/.626, which is good for a 163 OPS+, or the second-highest mark in baseball, behind Mike Trout.
If Ortiz is dead-set on retiring, and he seems to be, then he's going out on top.
