WATCH: Yoan Moncada hits big homer, wins MVP of Futures Game
The Red Sox prospect hit a go-ahead, two-run homer for the World
SAN DIEGO -- Team USA led for much of the Futures Game on Sunday, but Team World prevailed in the end, 11-3. The pivotal blow came off the bat of Red Sox prospect, Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada. With the World trailing 3-2, Moncada hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth, putting his team up for good.
The World actually made this one a laugher in the ninth, putting up seven spot, with Eloy Jimenez's three-run shot putting it to rest. Moncada's homer was the game-changer, though. He went 2 for 5 in the game and won the Larry Doby Futures Game MVP award.
The 21-year-old Moncada signed with the Red Sox after defecting from Cuba last year. He's only played 16 games in Double-A, but he's hitting .328/.366/.657 with three doubles, two triples and five home runs. We saw that same power on display in a clutch situation in the Futures Game. Moncada is the first Cuban-born player to win this award.
Last season, Kyle Schwarber took home the Futures Game MVP and ended up having a huge impact on the Cubs in the second half.
Moncada is primarily a second baseman. Obviously he's blocked there to the bigs by Dustin Pedroia for the time being, but he's a great athlete and can probably be moved around a bit if need be. For now, there's no rush as he hones his skills in the minors.
