Earlier today, we learned the Marlins will be without Giancarlo Stanton for the rest of the season . Naturally, it didn't take long for the Alex Rodriguez-to-Miami speculation to start anew.

The difference between this cycle of Rodriguez rumors and last week's? The Marlins only encouraged the conjecture. Here's what Michael Hill, Miami's vice president of baseball operations, told reporters:

As we detailed last week , Rodriguez could make sense for the Marlins in one capacity: as a platoon first baseman. The problems with that idea are that 1. Rodriguez hasn't played much first base throughout his career, and 2. Rodriguez does nothing to address the Marlins' outfield depth.

Future Marlin? Maybe, but not as Stanton's replacement. USATSI

Conversely, while Rodriguez doesn't fit as a Stanton replacement, there could be a fit in Miami for Carlos Gomez:

Gomez was designated for assignment by the Astros last week, and will be traded or released in the coming days. There's no telling which version of Gomez the Marlins would get, but he's a right-handed outfielder with historical success and that's about all the Fish can hope for at the moment.

Give the Marlins this much: they seem intent on making the postseason. Sunday's win brought them back to within a half game of the second wild card spot, with their exact positioning entering the new week hinging on whether the Cardinals win or lose on Sunday night.
