Brewers' Matt Garza surrenders five runs in loss vs. Pirates
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Matt Garza took the loss Sunday, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings while striking out three in his team's 5-2 defeat against the Pirates.

Garza, who also hit a batter and uncorked two wild pitches Sunday, gave up a pair of runs in the first inning and then a solo home run in the third to fall behind for good. The Pirates were able to tack two more runs onto his line in the sixth.

"If he doesn't allow those last two runs, it's a pretty good outing," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said to MLB.com. "He just gets in different situations where he'll make a good pitch and then all of a sudden he'll leave one up and we see the results of it."

Garza (1-2) has struggled in two of his three starts this season, putting together a 5.40 ERA and 9:9 K:BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings.

"I've just got to stay with the process," Garza said. "It's going to turn."

He's scheduled to face the Cardinals, the only team he's beat this season, Friday.

Brewers' Garza feels he might have been tipping pitches Tuesday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Brewers starting pitcher Matt Garza felt during Tuesday's outing against the Rockies he was tipping his pitches, so he conferred with catcher Jonathan Lucroy and switched up their signs in the middle of the game, per MLB.com.

"They were on a lot of stuff today," Garza said after the 5-2 loss. "It was pretty impressive."

Garza was particularly puzzled by Corey Dickerson's at-bat in the fourth inning. After five of the first six batters reached on hits -- including three doubles -- Garza was ahead in the count 0-2 against Dickerson before he noticed something strange.

"Then he slides up on the plate as the pitch is called," Garza said.

Garza threw a curveball in the dirt for a ball. Two pitches later, Dickerson had an RBI double.

"Maybe they had something, maybe they don't," Garza said. "They're locked in. There's nothing you can do. My breaking stuff wasn't sharp today; I don't know why.

"We went in there and changed some [signs] up, and they were still on it. So we don't know where it's coming from. That's neither here nor there. You can know what's coming and still not hit it."
