Brewers' Matt Garza showing results of mechanical overhaul
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Matt Garza underwent a mechanical overhaul this offseason with the help of his younger brother, MLB.com reports.

"Kind of just staying in myself, staying level," Garza said, describing the change. "For some reason I would get excited and have a [Mike] Fiers-type tilt, and that's not good for me. I think that's part of the reason my changeup hasn't really fully developed, and why I've had problems with consistency on my slider and breaking stuff. With this, it's helping me feel better about it. Staying consistent with my release and where the ball comes out. ... It's refreshing to be in control when I'm usually a guy who's rarely in control."

Garza surrendered two earned runs on four hits and two walks in three innings Wednesday while striking out two, but manager Ron Roenicke has noticed the improvement.

"I don't know if I notice so much the difference in mechanics as I notice his stuff," Roenicke said. "His stuff is way better now than it was last year at this time. Last year, we were 4-5 games into it and he didn't have the stuff we were used to seeing from him. He'll get his location down better. I'm liking what I'm seeing from him."

Brewers' Garza: 'I had a new fire awaken in me this offseason'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Matt Garza indicated Thursday that the "growing pains" of joining a new organization are gone in his second spring with the team, MLB.com reports.

"I think my world is settled, and it helps a lot," Garza said. "Last year I was still in a transitional period with taking care of the family, moving them around, and we made the decision to stay home [in California]. We bought a new place back home and set up shop, and now that huge world is in place. Everything else is fine. Financial security, job security. All I have to do is go play, and it's fun.

"I had a new fire awaken in me this offseason, which I haven't had in a while. The past couple years have kind of led me down that road. It's my fault, nobody else's. But things happen for a reason, and I think I found my reason."

Garza delivered his eighth straight season with an ERA under 4.00 in 2014, going 8-8 with a 3.64 ERA and 126:50 K:BB ratio in 163 1/3 innings.

Brewers set spring rotation, Kyle Lohse lined up for opening day
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Kyle Lohse will start the team's Cactus League opener Thursday, MLB.com reports, lining Lohse up to receive the opening-day start on April 6.

Though Lohse appears in line to start opening day, he dodged a question regarding the potential assignment. "How about we answer that question when something is official?" Lohse said.

After Lohse's Thursday start, the Brewers will line up Matt Garza, Wily Peralta, Mike Fiers and Jimmy Nelson in the spring rotation, FOXSportsWisconsin.com reports.

Matt Garza shut down with shoulder stiffness
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Brewers have scratched veteran starter Matt Garza from his Friday start with shoulder stiffness and replaced him with Jimmy Nelson.

Garza has been on a strong roll down the stretch. He has allowed just 10 earned runs in his last 38 2/3 innings pitched, but six of those runs came in one start. He has appearently finished his season at 8-8 with a 3.64 ERA.
