Mariners outfielder Justin Ruggiano owning reserve role this season
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Mariners outfielder Justin Ruggiano knows he's an add-on this season. Ruggiano, 32, will play in a reserve role this year for Seattle with Seth Smith and Austin Jackson considered starters. Ruggiano played in a minor league game Monday to get some extra work, reports MLB.com.

"I like doing that," Ruggiano said. "You can do whatever you want. You can take two strikes and work on your two-strike approach. You're not there trying to win a job, you're just working on things. To me, it's very beneficial. I'd go down there a couple times a week from here on out if I can. Get the ABs, work on some things."

With roles already filled in, Ruggiano knows he has to be ready no matter when manager Lloyd McClendon calls on him.

"You have a little more work to do between starts or pinch-hits or whatever it is you're going to do," he said. "You have a little more maintenance. It may require you standing in on some bullpens to see some live pitching, if you go a couple days without seeing it. In that aspect, yeah, there's a little more work than guys who play every day. But you just get comfortable being uncomfortable. Just be comfortable and let it all hang out."

Mariners DH Nelson Cruz to see time in right field 'on occasion'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz will see time in right field "on occasion" in order to let the team stream players through the designated-hiter slot, MLB.com reports.

"He’ll play out there in the season on occasion, because it’s nice to be able to rotate him out of that DH spot and give somebody else a day off and get him back on his feet," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "How much he’ll play in the spring, I’m not sure. But it would be safe to say he’ll play his share of games during the season in right field."

Cruz will primarly serve as a designated hitter by the Mariners but has played 744 games in right field in his career and 833 games in the outfield overall. While he's not on defense, the team is expected to use Seth Smith against most righties and Justin Ruggiano against most southpaws.

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said he is tentatively planning to bat the right-field tandem of Seth Smith and Justin Ruggiano second in the lineup, per The New Tribune.

The Mariners ranked last in the majors last season in on-base percentage (.260) from their No. 2 hitters. No other team was lower than .279.

Smith had a .367 OBP last season for San Diego, while Ruggiano had a .337 OBP in 81 games for the Cubs.

Report: Mariners, Austin Jackson agree to $7.7-million deal
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Mariners have avoided arbitration with outfielder Austin Jackson by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $7.7 million, the Seattle Times reports.

The team was able to avoid arbitration with five players in all Friday by agreeing to the terms of one-year contracts for each player. First basman Logan Morrison is scheduled to make $2.725 million with incentives for reaching 500 and 600 plate appearances. Outfielder Dustin Ackley will take in $2.6 million as well as another $50,000 bonus for reaching 500 plate appearances.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano, who was acquired from the Cubs earlier this offseason, will make $2.5 million and can earn another $20,000 if he reaches 375 plate appearances. Pitcher Charlie Furbush will earn $1.3 million.
