Reds pitcher Jason Marquis continues to make case for pitching staff
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis gave up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work Sunday. Marquis, who also added three strikeouts, now has a 3-1 record with a 3.46 ERA in six starts.

"He's really taken advantage of his opportunity," manager Bryan Price said. "I'm pleased with the way he's thrown the ball. When he’s been down in the zone with that sinker and slider and split combination, he's been pretty effective. He had another pretty good start today."

Marquis used 96 pitches to get through his outing.

"After the last outing, I felt pretty good with going deep into games," Marquis said. "I responded really well after the last start. Today coming in, I didn't know what my pitch limit was but I felt good enough to treat it like a regular season game. I was glad I was able to get that far."

Reds' Marquis happy with way he is throwing baseball post-surgery
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Reds starting pitcher Jason Marquis hasn't made a start in the majors since 2013 while working his way back from Tommy John surgery. But the 36-year-old pitcher has had a career resurgence this spring and is on track to open the season in the Reds' rotation.

"The ball is coming out of my hand in a way it hasn't the last five years," Marquis said, per MLB.com. "I've gotten some velocity back, but that's not the big thing. There's just more life on the ball.

"I'm throwing the ball instead of pushing it, guiding it. I think maybe I developed bad habits over those years to protect the elbow so I can pitch. More than anything, that's what I'm happiest with."

Marquis is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA in five spring starts.

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis gives up four runs in five innings
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Reds pitcher Jason Marquis struggled through his outing Wednesday, issuing two walks but giving up a two-run double against the White Sox. Manager Bryan Price isn't overly concerned with Marquis' performance.

"I didn't anticipate him shutting out the Cactus League," Price said. "He just wasn't as sharp today. His ball was coming back. He was missing his lanes with his sinker a little bit. He still got a bunch of ground-ball outs. When he was in the zone, he was typically pretty good."

Six pitchers vying for last two spots in Reds' rotation
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Six pitchers are competing for the fourth and fifth spots in the Reds rotation, and a week into spring training games, the races are still too close to call.

The half dozen pitchers have combined to give up one earned run so far this spring.

Lefthander Tony Cingrani hit 94 MPH with his fastball, showing that last season's shoulder trouble is behind him.

Righthander Anthony DeSclafani gave up an unearned run in his first start. "I felt like everything was working," he said.

Manager Bryan Price declared Cingrani and DeScalfani the early favorites.RHP Jason Marquis has thrown five hitless innings to work his way into the mix. RHP Raisel Iglesias and LHPs David Holmberg and Paul Maholm have also been effective.

"At this point in time, we've got a great list," Price said to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It would be a very difficult challenge to feel like we've got it right if we had to make our team today because so many of these guys are performing at such a high level."

Three perfect innings for Reds' Jason Marquis
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Jason Marquis made a case for a spot in the Reds' rotation with three perfect innings against the Mariners on Sunday.

Marquis struck out three of the nine batters he faced in his second start of the spring.

"I felt like it was a big improvement over the first game, in terms of pounding the bottom of the strike zone with my sinker," Marquis told C. Trent Rosengrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I would have liked to throw from the stretch, but once again, I'm competing for a spot, so it's nice to put up zeroes and go from there."
