The Cardinals activated catcher Tony Cruz from the paternity list Monday and optioned catcher Ed Easley to Triple-A Memphis.

Neither Cruz nor Easley has yet to appear in a game for the Cardinals this season. Cruz will return to a reserve role behind Yadier Molina.

The Cardinals announced Thursday they avoided arbitration with catcher Tony Cruz. The two sides agreed to a one-year deal worth $775,000, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Cruz hit .200 with one home run, five doubles and 17 RBI in 50 games last season for St. Louis. He is a career .225 hitter with three home runs and 47 RBI in 190 games.

Cardinals catcher Tony Cruz managed a big hit Thursday against the Giants.

Cruz struck in the fourth inning. With the game tied, Cruz stepped to the plate with the bases empty. On the second pitch of the at-bat, he belted an 88 mph slider out to left to put his team ahead. Cruz would also walk twice during the contest. He finished 1 for 2, with two runs scored and one RBI.

The Cardinals will go with Tony Cruz behind the plate for Game 5.

With Yadier Molina still unable to return due to an oblique injury, the team will turn to Cruz. A.J. Pierzynski got the nod for Game 4, but will be relagated to the bench Game 5. Cruz hit .200/.270/.259 over 135 at-bats in the regular season.
