Cubs' Travis Wood allows three runs in five innings Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood surrendered three earned runs on five hits and two walks in five innings while striking out three in Wednesday's spring start against the Mariners.

"I was able to locate pretty decently and keep them off balance," Wood said after the outing, per MLB.com.

Wood was coming off his worst outing of the spring but did a solid job of bouncing back Wednesday, working past an early run to throw three scoreless innings before giving up two more runs in the fifth. He has posted a 4.19 ERA in 19 1/3 innings. Wood is in the mix for a rotation spot.

Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson could be co-starters for Cubs
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

LHP Travis Wood and RHP Edwin Jackson thought they were battling for the final spot in the Cubs' rotation, but that might not be the case.

Manager Joe Maddon said the team is looking for creative ways to use both of them in some type of co-starters role.

“There’s different ways to utilize both of them,” manager Joe Maddon said Friday, per MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. “It’s hard to say they’re both starters but we’ve talked about different ways to make it fit.”

Jackson is 1-1, with a 1.00 ERA this spring. Wood is 1-0, 1.80.

Cubs' Travis Wood looking to bounce back after down 2014
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

After earning an All-Star bid in 2013, Cubs pitcher Travis Wood struggled last season, going 8-13 with a 5.03 ERA and 146:76 K:BB ratio in 173 2/3 innings.

"You always learn more when you fail than when you succeed, and I learned a lot last year about how to go about when you fail, picking yourself back up and getting back after it," Wood said Thursday, per MLB.com. "That’s what we took into the offseason."

Wood is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation after he was not included in the quartet manager Joe Maddon initially named to the rotation.

"There is [a purpose] — the purpose is to not have a year like last year," Wood said. "I know I’m a good pitcher and just have to get back to the basics of attacking the zone and trusting your stuff."

Wood pitched two perfect innings in his spring debut Thursday, striking out two batters.

Jackson, Wood among five vying for final spot in Cubs' rotation
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With Cubs manager Joe Maddon indicating Monday that Kyle Hendricks has a spot in the rotation locked up behind Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta and Jason Hammel, that leaves Travis Wood, Edwin JacksonFelix Doubront, Jacob Turner and Tsuyoshi Wada vying for the final spot in the team's rotation.

“Everybody understands what’s going on here. There are no dummies," Maddon said, per MLB.com. “The line I like is that, I’m not going to lie to you. If I tell you the truth, you might be upset with me for about a week or two but then you’re going to be OK. But if I lie to you, you’re going to hate me forever.

“They’re very competitive and the fact we have a lot of folks for some really narrow choices, it’s going to be an interesting spring. I know that competition normally brings out the best in everyone.”
