Travis Wood strikes out nine, blasts home run Monday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood allowed just one earned run on six hits in seven innings while striking out nine and walking none in his team's 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks Monday.

Wood (1-2) was integral to the win both on the mound and at the plate, smacking a three-run home run in the second inning as part of a 2-for-3, four-RBI performance, which leaves him with a .333/.429/1.000 line at the plate. He also owns a 2.52 ERA and 28:4 K:BB ratio in 25 innings. Wood will be up against the Brewers in Milwaukee Saturday.

The Yankees only managed one extra-base hit (a double) against Wood, who gave up one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. He owns a 3.00 ERA and 19:4 K:BB ratio in 18 innings. Wood (0-2) will face the Diamondbacks Monday or Tuesday.

Travis Wood excellent, Cubs bullpen terrible Thursday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Cubs starter Travis Wood performed far better than did his bullpen Thursday against Pittsburgh. The result was a undeserved no-decision.

Wood struck out six consecutive batters en route to a fine performance in which he gave up just one run on four hits in six innings. He walked three, fanned nine and left with a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, the relievers threw his win out the window by giving up five runs in the seventh.

The southpaw now has 17 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings pitched to start the season.

Travis Wood blows lead in loss to Phillies
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Cubs starter Travis Wood had his strikeout pitches working Friday, but lost his effectiveness against Philadelphia in the middle innings and the game to boot.

Wood had a shutout and 2-0 lead going through three, but an error to open the fourth opened the floodgates. He gave up three runs on four hits, including a home run to Chase Utley, before recovering to get the Phillies in order in the sixth. A poor performance by the bullpen ensured his defeat. He finished with eight strikeouts, however.

He is scheduled to make his next start Thursday against Gerrit Cole and the Pirates.
