Cubs' Joe Maddon loves Travis Wood's 'dirtbag' approach
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood and first-year manager Joe Maddon haven't been working together for very long, but in that short period of time, the left-hander has made a favorable impression on his new manager.

"We talked about the athleticism with him," Maddon said Wednesday after Wood pitched seven-plus innings of three-hit ball under blustery conditions against the Reds, per the Chicago Tribune. "He different. As pitchers go, you could label him as a dirtbag. I kind of love that phrase when you’re talking about a good baseball player, and he is that -- no excuses, ready to go. Give me the ball, I’m fine."

Wood, who struck out seven batters in Wednesday's win, took Maddon's "dirtbag" comment as a compliment.

"Absolutely. Absolutely," Wood said.

Cubs P Travis Wood has strong performance in win
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood pitched seven scoreless innings in Wednesday night's 5-0 win over the Reds.

"Early in the game, he was throwing good quality fastballs, so I decided I'm just going to stick with it until they make adjustments," catcher Miguel Montero said after the game, per MLB.com. "Even if they do make adjustments, it was quality pitches. ... They didn't look comfortable."

Wood struck out seven batters and walked two. He only allowed three hits while throwing 99 pitches and faced 24 batters.

"From the first inning, I could tell we had pretty good command of the fastball today, and that was the approach we took," Wood said. "I was able to keep them off-balance and get some early outs and pound the zone."

Credited with the win, Wood is now 1-1 this season with an ERA of 2.31. His next start is projected for April 21 against the Pirates.

Travis Wood gives up seven hits in Cubs' loss
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Travis Wood gave up seven hits in four and two thirds innings as the Cubs lost to the Rockies, 4-1. Wood allowed three runs and walked two while striking out five. He threw 90 pitches, 59 for strikes.

"We were keeping them off-balance and getting some quick outs and cruising for awhile," Wood said, per MLB.com. "One pitch to 'Tulo' pretty much erased everything."

Troy Tulowitzki's two-run double helped lead the Rockies' rally.

Wood's next start is Wednesday, at Wrigley against the Reds and Jason Marquis.

Cubs' Travis Wood allows three runs in five innings Wednesday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood surrendered three earned runs on five hits and two walks in five innings while striking out three in Wednesday's spring start against the Mariners.

"I was able to locate pretty decently and keep them off balance," Wood said after the outing, per MLB.com.

Wood was coming off his worst outing of the spring but did a solid job of bouncing back Wednesday, working past an early run to throw three scoreless innings before giving up two more runs in the fifth. He has posted a 4.19 ERA in 19 1/3 innings. Wood is in the mix for a rotation spot.
