Cubs pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada to start Wednesday for Travis Wood
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Cubs pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada will replace Travis Wood in the starting rotation on Wednesday against the Padres, manager Joe Maddon said per the Chicago Tribune.

Wood was moved to the bullpen on Saturday, earning his first career save in the game. Wada will join Chicago after his rehab stint this week.

"I have a lot of faith in this guy coming out of the pen," Maddon said of Wood. "He has had some really good games this year and really good moments in other ones. Just go out there and be aggressive, assertive and let it go for an inning or two. I think when he does that, he can be really good.

"We also talked to him about the potential of becoming a starter again at some point. But right now we are looking at it this way."

Wada posted a 4-4 record with a 3.25 ERA in 69 1/3 innings of work in 2014.

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood adjusting to new role in bullpen
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood is adjusting well to his new role as a reliever, earning his first career save Saturday with a perfect ninth inning, reports ESPN.com.

But Wood, an All-Star as a starter in 2013, was demoted from the Cubs' rotation after seven starts this season, going 2-2 with a 5.59 ERA.

"On a personal level maybe a little bit [disappointed], but as long as I'm here and can help the team win," Wood said. "We're playing great baseball right now. Everything I can do, regardless of what it is, I'll do it."

Cubs LHP Travis Wood closes out Pirates for first career save
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Cubs left-hander Travis Wood picked up his first career save in Saturday's win over the Pirates. Wood, who started and pitched 4 1/3 innings on Thursday, pitched a perfect inning to preserve the 4-1 victory.

Hector Rondon, who is the Cubs closer, had worked each of the last three days. So with a three-run lead, manager Joe Maddon opted to rest Rondon. Wood will remain in the bullpen for the foreseeable future. The Cubs will determine on Sunday who will join the rotation, but it may be Tsuyoshi Wada, according to the Daily Herald.

Cubs' Travis Wood gives up five in no decision
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Cubs starter Travis Wood escaped with a no decision after a rough start against the Mets.

Wood gave up five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked one, struck out five and was tagged for three home runs. Wood threw 97 pitches, 60 strikes.

"This start and the last couple, it's been the home run that's gotten me and made me throw extra pitches," Wood said, per MLB.com. "Right now, it's the balls and a couple pitches -- I know there's always more than a couple that you miss within a game -- but the ones they're making contact with are the ones leaving the park. We've got to emphasize getting back to throwing strikes and throwing quality strikes."

Wood's next start is scheduled for Wednesday, at San Diego.

Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood roughed up again in loss on Saturday
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood (2-2) was touched for four runs, three via two home runs, on six hits in four innings to take the loss against the Brewers.

Wood gave up long balls to Gerardo Parra, a two-run shot in the second inning, and a solo job from Jean Segura in the fourth.

"You just keep putting your guys out there until it happens," manager Joe Maddon said after the game. "You keep working with them showing a positive message to them. The work is good, but for some of the guys, it's just not playing all the way through yet. But it will."

It's the second consecutive outing that Wood has struggled, getting ripped for six runs in five innings for a loss in his last start.

Wood will look to turn it around in his next start scheduled for Thursday against the Mets.
