Red Sox send Rusney Castillo, Jackie Bradley Jr. to Triple-A
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

The Red Sox announced several roster moves on Thursday, per the Boston Globe. The team optioned outfielders Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr. to Triple-A, and reassigned Matt SpringHumberto Quintero and Dana Eveland to minor-league camp.

Bradley and Castillo are expected to see work at right and center field in the minors, while Shane Victorino starts at right field in the majors.

"Both he and Jackie were difficult decisions. Both guys had great springs... Rusney did everything we asked of him," Farrell said, per the Boston Herald. "He's going to play both right and center in Pawtucket. The everyday at-bats are part of that, so is the depth and overall roster."

Castillo hit .310/.310/.621 with one double, one triple, two home runs and five RBI this spring. Bradley slashed .378.462/.444 with three doubles and one RBI in Grapefruit League play.

Red Sox's Quintero holds off in exercising opt-out clause
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Red Sox catcher Humberto Quintero will wait a few more days before deciding if he will exercise the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract.

Quintero was in good shape to make the Opening Day roster following the news of Christian Vazquez's elbow injury, but the acquistion Monday of catcher Sandy Leon means Quintero is still vying for a spot on the roster.

“I’ve been playing in the big leagues for a few years so I know, it’s baseball,” the 35-year-old Quintero said, per WEEI.com. “I’ll just try and do my best every time they put me in the lineup. I’ve hit the ball well, blocked the ball, and I feel great.”

Red Sox appear willing to be patient with prospect Blake Swihart
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Barring an injury to Christian Vazquez or Ryan Hanigan, Red Sox catcher prospect Blake Swihart is expected to open the season in the minors, per The Providence Journal.

Manager John Farrell said the team would be comfortable going with Swihart if Vazquez or Hanigan were hurt, but that doesn't mean he would be the team's first callup.

"We would be comfortable, but that doesn't mean we would make that move," Farrell said. "He's still developing with his receiving, particularly. The game-calling, he's getting familiar with guys he's catching for the first time."

Veteran catcher Humberto Quintero appears headed to Triple-A Pawtucket with Swihart to provide organizational depth for the Red Sox. Quintero would likely get the call to the majors, if Swihart is not ready to replace an injured player.

"That's part of the thinking," Farrell said.
