Athletics SP Barry Zito to make first spring start Thursday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Athletics starting pitcher Barry Zito is scheduled to make his first Cactus Leauge start Thursday against the Cubs, MLB.com reports.

The outing will be Zito's first game action since 2013. Manager Bob Melvin said earlier in February that Zito would get one shot in a Cactus League start to see whether he deserves a shot at a major-league comeback. If Thursday's start goes well, he could receive more chances with an eye on potentially making the team's rotation.

Zito won the AL Cy Young Award in 2002 as a member of the A's. He took the 2014 season off after the Giants declined his $18-million option.

"I have a fresh perspective," Zito said last week. "I've got my passion back, and I just want to continue to work hard and go out and enjoy competing. I guess you could say I'm competing against all these guys, but for me, it's more about competing against myself. If I can be as good as I know I can be every time out here, I know the rest will take care of itself."

Zito put together a 102-63 record in his time with Oakland as well as a 3.55 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 1,096 strikeouts in 1,430 1/3 innings over seven seasons. He then signed a big free-agent deal with the Giants, 63-80 with a 4.62 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 787 strikeouts in 1,139 1/3 innings over seven seasons.

Athletics' Barry Zito groomed as a starter
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Athletics manager Bob Melvin told reporters that he was impressed by the energy pitcher Barry Zito showed during his side session on Saturday, according to the Bay Area News Group.

Zito, who signed a minor-league deal with the club that drafted him on Monday, said he's being groomed as a starter, and is going back to the same delivery and pitch selection that helped him win the AL Cy Young in 2002 as a member of the A's.

"He was very focused for a guy who's done this a few times," Melvin said. "I thought he threw the ball well. He threw all his pitches. He had good energy. And his curve ball looked great."

The 36-year-old left-hander was out of the majors in 2014 and went 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA in 2013. It remains to be seen if he would be willing to start the season at Triple-A if he doesn't make the big-league roster out of camp.

A's Bob Melvin: Barry Zito to get one Cactus League start
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Pitcher Barry Zito is back with the organization that drafted him in the first round 16 years ago. However, he'll only be given one shot to prove he deserves a look at making a big league comeback.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said that Zito will be given one Cactus League start this spring, via MLB.com. Depending on how Zito does will determine if he gets another.

"You don't bring a guy into camp if there's no shot," Melvin said. "Now, there are a lot of young guys here we like, but it's always nice to have a veteran guy who still has the passion and desire."

Behind Sonny Gray and Scott Kazmir, depth is thin in the A's rotation. Zito is long past his early-2000s prime, when he won the Cy Young in 2002 as a member of the A's. He didn't pitch at all in 2014.

Signing a minor-league deal on Monday, Zito apparently seems hopeful of making one last run in the majors.

"He took a year off and really feels reinvigorated about going out there and playing baseball for the love of the game," Melvin said. "We'll see how it all plays out. I know I have at least one start for him early on."

Athletics, Barry Zito agree to minor-league deal
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Pitcher Barry Zito is set to sign a minor-league deal with the Athletics, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports that Zito's base contract is for $1 million, and he can earn $175,000 in incentives.

Zito will join the A's in camp this spring, returning to the team with which he won the AL Cy Young Award in 2002. He was a three-time All-Star with Oakland before signing a seven-year megadeal with the Giants before the 2007 season.

Zito wrapped up his time in San Francisco by going 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA and 86:54 K:BB ratio in 133 1/3 innings in 2013. He did not latch on with a major-league team last season.

Zito was initially drafted by the Mariners in the 59th round of the 1996 draft and again by the Rangers in the third round of the 1998 draft but didn't sign with either team. He then inked a deal with the A's after being selected ninth overall in the 1999 draft.

Zito quickly moved through the minors and made his debut on July 22, 2000, giving up just one earned run in five innings and earning a win despite issuing six walks. He went on to post a 7-4 record with a 2.72 ERA and 78:45 K:BB ratio in 92 2/3 innings over 14 starts, earning him sixth place in the 2000 AL Rookie of the Year voting.

Zito recorded an AL-best 23 wins en route to his Cy Young win in 2002, posting a 2.75 ERA and 182:78 K:BB ratio in 229 1/3 innings. He posted a 3.55 ERA in seven seasons in Oakland before moving next door to San Francisco, where he delivered a 4.62 ERA in his last seven seasons.

Report: Indians not interested in signing Barry Zito
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Indians are not interested in signing pitcher Barry Zito, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

The Indians were among the teams to watch Zito at his throwing session in Houston Tuesday, but it appears they were either unimpressed by the session or were just being thorough in scouring the pitching market. Zito was out of the majors in 2014 and went 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA in 2013.
