The club cut down from 58 to 46 players Thursday. Both Ranaudo and Cecchini are considered prospects within the system, but need more time to develop in the minors before they make their major-league debuts.
Cecchini hit .322/.443/.471 with seven home runs, 61 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 454 at-bats between high Class A Salem and Double-A Portland in 2013. Brentz his .264/.312/.475 with 17 home runs and 56 RBI in 326 at-bats with Triple-A Pawtucket. Ranaudo went 11-5 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 127:47 K:BB ratio in 140 innings between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.
Brentz was thought to be out for the remained of the year after undergoing surgery in July. In his first game back, Brentz went 1 for 3 with the home run. He finished with one run scored and two RBI.
Brentz is hitting .270/.323/.506 over two levels in the minors.
Brentz injured himself on a slide on July 5 and has not played since. He would need roughly six weeks to recover from surgery and it remains unclear if the Red Sox would consider using him as a major-league option when rosters expand in September. He batted .272 with 16 homers and 53 RBI in 75 games at Triple-A Pawtucket.
Triple-A Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina swears
"He may have flown under the radar for a lot of other teams, but for our organization, we know what we have with him," DiSarcina said, per MLB.com. "He's kind of a hidden gem. He's not on the 40-man roster, so there hasn't been a lot of hype about him."
Brentz is batting .270 with a .484 slugging percentage and .807 OPS in 70 games for Pawtucket. He also has one triple, 14 doubles, 15 home runs, 33 runs and 51 RBI. Unfortunately, Brentz's high strikeout rate (71 strikeouts to 19 walks) means he still has an area of his game that needs improvement.
"The thing we're trying to get him to do is to be steady -- cut down on the strikeouts and use the whole field. He's strong enough to hit the ball to right-center field," DiSarcina said. "He's working on plate discipline. He'll try to hit a home run with the first-pitch fastball. But he'll also try to hit a home run on the outside slider -- and ends up grounding out to third. With two strikes, he needs to use right-center and not worry about hitting the ball out of the park down the left-field line. He's strong enough to hit the ball out to right-center."
