Jim Henderson snags win vs. Pirates Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Jim Henderson earned the win in his team's 8-7 victory over the Pirates Saturday after giving up one hit and striking out one in a scoreless eighth inning.

The Brewers took the lead on a two-run ninth-inning home run, securing the victory for the former closer. Henderson (2-0) owns a 3.86 ERA and 10:3 K:BB ratio in seven innings.

Plan for getting Jim Henderson back to closing still fluid
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke made a surprise move in going with Francisco Rodriguez to close out the team's opener Monday, but that may not last. Tuesday, Roenicke restated his confidence in Jim Henderson's ability to do the job, and told MLB.com he expects Henderson to be in the closer's role once his confidence is back.

"I think this is the best way to get his confidence back," Roenicke said. "Say I put him into that [closer] role last night and his stuff really isn't ready and his confidence isn't there and he gives it up last night, what does that do to his confidence? So we're doing this to try to get him back, the best way we can and the fastest way we can. We think this is the best way to do it."

Roenicke discussed the decision with Henderson before the team opened the season, and Henderson told a local radio station he isn't quite sure what his role will be for the time being. Roenicke, however, said he wants to get Henderson some work in low-stress situations in order to build him back up.

"Ideally, I would like to get him a couple of outings where the game wasn't on the line. That's ideal," Roenicke said. "I'm not saying we can do that, because if he has to pitch an inning I need him to pitch, then he'll pitch. But we want him as a closer. That's what we want. We want him as the guy he was last year, and that's what we're trying to get him to be. If a couple of outings helps him get back to where he was -- maybe it's more than a couple, maybe it's just one. I don't know."

Henderson posted a 2.70 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 60 innings of work last season, but struggled in the spring.

Brewers throw Fantasy owners a curveball in ninth
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Francisco Rodriguez closed for the Brewers in their season opener Monday, not Jim Henderson. Ron Roenicke somehow went all spring without dropping so much as a hint of this possibility. Clearly, he doesn't play Fantasy Baseball.

He said he wants to give Henderson a chance to "get his stuff back," which begs the question, "where did it go?" I mean, he wasn't exactly lights out that spring, but that's true for a lot of closers. I never saw any reports of diminished stuff or reduced confidence. It's strange all the way around.

But I'm inclined to think it'll continue for the foreseeable future. You may remember that when Henderson returned from a hamstring injury last June, the Brewers stuck with Rodriguez in the closer role for a couple more weeks before trading him to the Orioles, and he was terrific, compiling a 1.31 ERA in 21 appearances from his first save to his last. And yes, he has a bit of a history in the role.

Of course, it's possible Rodriguez will blow it this time, giving the Brewers an easy transition back to Henderson. He's not the dominant pitcher he used to be, after all. But I'd prepare for a long wait, potentially even dropping Henderson for Rodriguez if you can't afford to roster both.

Francisco Rodriguez earns save Monday, will close 'for now'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Brewers pitcher Francisco Rodriguez earned the save in Monday's 2-0 win over the Braves, striking out two and allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning of work.

Manager Ron Roenicke said after the game that Rodriguez would close "for now" in order to give incumbent closer Jim Henderson time to "get his stuff back," MLB.com reports. Rodriguez is no stranger to closing, having racked up 304 saves entering the 2014 season.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Brewers manager Doug Melvin told MLB.com on Saturday that Jim Henderson will remain the closer of the team come opening day. Henderson converted 28 of 32 in saves, and owned a 2.70 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP through 60 innings.
