Verrett was picked by the Orioles in the 2015 Rule 5 draft, so they have history with him. He managed a 2.84 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 31.2 innings as a reliever, but posted a 6.45 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 60 innings as a starter with the Mets last year. The Mets obviously were not going to be using him as a starter in 2017, but the Orioles could wind up trying him in that role at some point, considering some of the mediocre options they have used in recent seasons. That said, even if he were to find his way into the rotation, he would be unappealing in the majority of fantasy formats. If he ends up relieving, then he becomes even less interesting, as he would be used in middle relief.
Verrett has played very well during his last two starts with Las Vegas. Over 12 innings, he allowed just two runs and eight hits. However, control continued to be an issue as he walked eight batters in that time. During his 30 outings with the
Verrett's agents are claiming his recent issues -- 0-3 with a 7.18 ERA in seven starts since Matt Harvey was injured -- are due to a neck injury. The Mets had team doctors perform an MRI and they found nothing significant, but they've sent the results off for a second opinion. We'll have to wait and see what happens in this case, but either way, it sounds like Verrett won't be pitching in the Mets' rotation anytime soon.
Verrett was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday, ESPN's Adam Rubin reports.
He lost his spot in the big league rotation after getting hammered for eight runs over 2.2 innings Friday. Jon Niese moves into the rotation and Gabriel Ynoa was recalled to provide bullpen depth as a corresponding move. Verrett could be an option to slot back into the rotation down the road if Niese struggles.
Verrett gave up eight runs on six hits and three walks in 2.2 innings Friday against the Padres and will be replaced in the rotation by Jon Niese going forward, The Record's Matt Ehalt reports.
Niese is coming back from a knee injury, but is expected to be ready to slot into the rotation Wednesday in Arizona. Verrett will either be optioned to Triple-A or moved to a long relief role out of the bullpen.
