Pirates SP A.J. Burnett goes seven innings in win over Tigers
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett had amazing stuff on Wednesday against the Tigers.

Burnett tossed seven innings, allowed seven hits and just two earned runs before being pulled from the game. He picked up his seventh win of the season in a game where he was never truly in trouble at any point -- he gave up runs off a single and infield groundout.

The run support in the 9-3 win helped Burnett keep his compusure and settle into another good performance.

"The boys came out swinging," Burnett said, per MLB.com. "It was good to see Pedro get one and for Walker to have the day he had (4-for-6). Anytime they come out swinging like that, man, it helps out."

Burnett (7-3) has a 2.05 ERA with 90 strikeouts and 27 walks in 105 1/3 innings this season.

Pirates SP A.J. Burnett strikes out five in no-decision
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

Pirates starting pitcher A.J. Burnett was solid against the Reds on Thursday.

Burnett threw six innings, allowed eight hits and gave up just one earned run in a no-decision. He left the game with a 4-2 lead and a chance to pick up his seventh win of the year, but his bullpen allowed two runs in the seventh inning.

Burnett (6-3) has a 2.01 ERA with 86 strikeouts and 27 walks in 98 1/3 innings this season.

Pirates SP A.J. Burnett knocked around for 14 hits on Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett gave up a career-high 14 hits on Friday against the Nationals. But somehow he managed to escape with just four runs scored (three earned) over his 6 2/3 innings. Burnett walked one and struck out seven, needing just 98 pitches on the evening.

Burnett (6-3, 2.05 ERA) got into an early deficit when he gave up two runs in the first inning. He then gave up additional runs in the third and seventh innings before being lifted for a reliever.

"I don't think I've ever seen a pitcher go into the seventh giving up double-digit hits like that," manager Clint Hurdle said, per MLB.com, "and have the game still in hand. It wasn't his 'A' stuff. But his will to compete got things done and kept us in the ballgame."

This is just the third time in 14 starts this season that Burnett has given up at least three earned runs. But he was still left with his third loss of the season. He's set to square off against the Reds at home on Thursday.
