Here we go again with A.J. Burnett
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

You want to give up on A.J. Burnett. You do. But every time you think you can move on, he does something like he did Monday night, striking out 12 Nationals in seven innings.

So what's the solution? Ignore it? You'd think it'd be easy coming off a stretch of seven starts in which he compiled a 6.41 ERA, but considering he preceded those seven with another seven in which he compiled a 2.94 ERA, yeah, not so much.

And just in case your head wasn't already spinning, he throws in comments like this one:

"I just noticed something with my delivery, or the leg kick," Burnett said. "I just noticed something wasn't right. I was like, 'That's not me out there. Who is that?' It's the first time I felt like me in a long time.

"I wish I could have found that little glitch about a month, two months ago."

Yeah, so do we. The question is when's the next one? Given his ups and downs, you can't trust Burnett's mechanics to hold, but if this latest tweak prompts another hot streak, you have an opportunity for some cheap strikeouts down the stretch.

I want to see one more start -- one more start of increased velocity and high-end production -- before I invest in him again.

A.J. Burnett strikes out 12 Nationals
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Phillies pitcher A.J. Burnett turned in a fantastic start Monday against the Nationals.

Burnett allowed one run on three hits over seven innings. He struck out 12 and walked one during the outing. Burnett was exceptional over the start. He didn’t give up a hit until the third inning, when Tanner Roark managed to single to center. Burnett gave up his only run in the sixth inning. After getting Denard Span to fly out, Burnett allowed a solo home run to Anthony Rendon. Burnett gave up his third hit the following inning, but was able to pitch around it.

With the win, Burnett improved to 7-14. He’ll take on the Mets in his next start.

A.J. Burnett surrenders four runs in loss vs. Angels
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Phillies pitcher A.J. Burnett was stuck with a loss Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on five hits and four walks in six innings and striking out four in his team's 4-3 defeat against the Angels.

Burnett (6-13) has dropped four straight stats, and though he managed to limit the damage to one run in the first five innings Wednesday, he surrendered three runs in the sixth to lose the lead and eventually take the loss. It was his 10th time in 26 starts issuing at least four walks. Burnett owns a 4.35 ERA and 136:72 K:BB ratio in 163 1/3 innings. He's scheduled to face the Mariners Tuesday.
