Cuddyer would have taken Rockies offer, if Mets deal wasn't available
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

New Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer assured Tuesday the injuries that limited him to 49 games in 2014 with the Rockies are no longer an issue.

"I feel outstanding," the 35-year-old Cuddyer said. "The last month of the season I was at full strength. None of my injuries are chronic injuries."

Cuddyer also told reporters Tuesday that if the Mets deal didn't come together Monday, then he would have accepted the Rockies' one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer. Cuddyer instead signed a two-year, $21 million deal with the Mets.

Mets targeted Cuddyer since they feel ready to compete in 2015
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Although the Mets lost their 2015 first-round pick as a result of signing veteran Michael Cuddyer, who was given a qualifying offer by the Rockies last week, they feel it was worth it since Cuddyer could be a piece the team needs to be competitive next season.

"Certainly we value our draft picks and would like to hold on to them, but at the same time we're looking to win," Mets assistant general manager John Ricco, per NJ.com. "We decided in this case the value of Michael Cuddyer was worth it.

"We're looking to turn the corner here and compete in 2015. I think this is a message that we're going to be aggressive right out of the docks. We had a guy we liked and we went out and got him."

The Mets signed Cuddyer for his versatility to play in the outfield and first base. They also view him as protection in the lineup for third baseman David Wright.

"He is a proven offensive threat who also brings versatility in the field with the ability to play multiple positions," general manager Sandy Alderson said.

Move to Citi Field doesn't bode well for Michael Cuddyer
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst

Because injuries decimated Michael Cuddyer's final season with the Rockies, his Fantasy value was already in question heading into 2015. Now that he has rejected the Rockies' qualifying offer and signed a two-year deal with the Mets, there is even more reason to shy away from Cuddyer as a potential keeper or on draft day.

It's never good news when a power hitter leaves Coors Field, but Citi Field isn't the pitcher's park it is reputed to be, and it will likely be even less so after the fences in right-center field are brought in this offseason. Since the Mets altered their stadium's dimensions three seasons ago, the park has played well for right-handed power hitters, but not to the degree that Coors Field has. Even more problematic for Cuddyer, Citi Field has been very tough on doubles hitters. Cuddyer hit 76 doubles as a Rockie, but only 33 of those were hit on the road.

Then there's the matter of Cuddyer's batting average. He followed up his National League-leading .331 average from 2013 with a .332 mark in 2014, but Cuddyer's high averages have been built in large part on high line drive rates. Citi Field has not been a great park for line drives, and it's certainly not Coors Field in this regard. Cuddyer could lose some singles as well as doubles in his new home park.

The Mets' addition of Cuddyer gives them a more powerful option to fill out their outfield than they would have had otherwise, but while he represents an upgrade for them, he's not necessarily going to be valuable for owners in standard mixed leagues. With a .300 batting average and 30-plus doubles now in question, Cuddyer is looking more like a late-round option than the mid-round pick he was earlier this year.

Mets sign Michael Cuddyer to two-year deal
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Mets announced Monday they signed veteran outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a two-year contract. Because the Rockies offered Cuddyer a qualifying offer, the Mets have forfeited their first-round pick (15th) in the 2015 MLB Draft.

The two-year deal is worth $21 million, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The 35-year-old Cuddyer appeared in just 49 games for Colorado in 2014 due to injury. Although, he did hit .332 with a .579 slugging percentage, .955 OPS, 10 home runs, 15 doubles and 31 RBI.

Qualifying offer may price Mets out of signing Michael Cuddyer
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

With the Rockies extending a $15.3 million qualifying offer to outfielder Michael Cuddyer, sources have indicated the surprise offer has the Mets looking at other options.

Any team that signs a player with a qualifying offer has to forfeit a draft pick, and the Mets have no interest in giving up their first-round pick in next year’s draft, a source told Newsday.

Cuddyer, 35, is coming off an injury-plagued 2014 season, where he played in only 49 games, but he still batted .332 with 10 home runs and 31 RBI.
