Marlon Byrd goes yard, plates two runs in loss to Brewers
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd was one of the few bright spots, as he clubbed his second home run of the season in his team's 6-2 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday.

Byrd took starter Marco Estrada deep for a solo home run in the second, and then drove in another run on an infield single in the sixth inning. He finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI. He is hitting .263 (10 for 38) with two home runs and six RBI in his first 38 at-bats.

Marlon Byrd goes hitless vs. Cubs Saturday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd went 0 for 3 with a walk Saturday, striking out twice and leaving four on base in his team's 2-0 win over the Cubs.

Byrd homered on Opening Day and finished the team's Texas series 5 for 12, but he's 0 for 8 in two games against the Cubs, giving him a .238/.304/.381 line in 21 at-bats. He'll continue to serve as the Phillies' regular right fielder.

Phillies might trade for a backup center fielder
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said depth in center field remains an area of need and added an addition would more than likely come through a trade rather than free agency, according to The Philadelphia Daily News.

John Mayberry is currently the only major-league player projected to back up center fielder Ben Revere. However, Amaro said new right fielder Marlon Byrd might see some time in center field this season.

Marlon Byrd ready to prove skeptics wrong
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Coming off one of the best seasons of his career at 35 years old, new Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd is going to face a lot of questions about whether or not he will be able to repeat his offensive success in 2014.

Byrd knows the skeptics will be out in full force after he served a 50-game suspension in 2012 for using a performance-enhancing substance.

"Everything last year until I retire will be looked at that way because I did test positive," he told MLB.com. "The guys that don’t like talking about it are the ones that were trying to cheat or trying to beat the system. I wasn’t. I was stupid. I took something. I didn’t do my due diligence. It’s as simple as that, so it’s easy for me to talk about it because I have nothing to hide."

Marlon Byrd explains his breakout
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Newly signed Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd, who broke out with 24 home runs in 2013 after hovering in the 7-12 range for most of his career, told the Philadelphia Inquirer he made an adjustment to his swing prior to the season.

"When I say it out loud, it sounds kind of silly," Byrd said. "My whole career, I've been taught to hit the top of the ball. When I started breaking down the swing, I realized when you hit the top of the ball, the ball goes down and it's a ground ball. If you can stay through the middle of the ball, you can get the ball in the air. That's what we worked on to try to drive the ball for more power."

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. thinks the explanation is valid, which is a big reason why he offered the 36-year-old a two-year, $16 million deal.

"We talked to our scouts about how his swing path and approach changed," Amaro said. "He's worked on it. I have to trust my scouts on it."
