Jose Valverde released following loss Monday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Mets reliever Jose Valverde had a pretty unforgettable Monday. After taking the loss in Monday's game against the Pirates, the Mets announced minutes after the game went final they released the veteran reliever, who held the role of closer earlier this season.

Valverde entered Monday's game with the Mets leading 2-1 and with two outs in the eighth inning. He was immediately greeted by a Starling Marte doubled, who scored one batter later on Jose Tabata's RBI single. Valverde retired Clint Barmes to escape the jam, but he ran into more trouble in the ninth inning.

Valverde allowed a one-out single to Neil Walker and a walk to Andrew McCutchen before Gaby Sanchez put Pittsburgh ahead with a two-RBI single. Valverde was then replaced by Carlos Torres, who allowed Sanchez to score on a Russell Martin double.

Valverde (1-1) was charged with four runs on four hits and one walk in two-thirds inning. His ERA ballooned to 5.56 before his release.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jose Valverde will close Friday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

If the Mets have a save situation Friday, either Daisuke Matsuzaka or Jose Valverde will close, according to MLB.com.

The club has been utilizing a closer by committee approach the past few games. Matsuzaka has picked up one save this year. Valverde has recorded two saves this season.

Mets closer drama not a good situation for Fantasy owners
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With the surprising demotion of reliever Kyle Farnsworth, the Mets are once again scrambling to fill the closer's role.

Mets manager Terry Collins hasn't named a replacement, but earlier in the week when he was talking about a committee approach he mentioned Jeurys Familia, Jose Valverde and Daisuke Matsuzaka as candidates to close. Collins also said Jenrry Mejia, who was recently moved from the rotation to the bullpen, will enter the mix down the road, per MLB.com.

So what do Fantasy owners do? Hopefully, pray Collins will eventually name a closer and stick with him.

In the short term, if you are looking to replace Farnsworth, consider Familia and Matsuzaka your best options. Personally, I would add Familia since Collins hinted Sunday Familia is "real close" to stepping into the closer role.

But if you are in a deep format and looking for a player to stash, I'd consider Mejia. His problem in the rotation was facing hitters a second and third time through the lineup. He was pretty good the first time, holding opponents to a .193 batting average.

In 2011, Baseball America had Mejia as the Mets' top prospect. They wrote, "Even if he flames out as a starter, he can be a dominating late-inning reliever." I definitely buy that.

Mets going 'game by game' with save chances
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Mets manager Terry Collins is making another change at closer. He told reporters Tuesday the closer situation will be handled "game by game" in part due to Kyle Farnsworth's heavy workload.

Collins said Farnsworth, Jose Valverde, Jeurys Familia and Daisuke Matsuzaka could be under consideration for save opportunities.

Bobby Parnell began the season as the team's closer before suffering a season-ending elbow injury, which required Tommy John surgery. Valverde replaced him as closer before he was removed in favor of Farnsworth.

Mets keeping closer options open
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Mets inserted Kyle Farnsworth into the closing role this weekend, but general manager Sandy Alderson is keeping his options open regarding the role moving forward, including potentially using Carlos Torres or the recently removed Jose Valverde in the ninth inning at some point, the Star-Ledger reports.

"In my view we’ve got a lot of guys that are sort of on a par," Sandy Alderson regarding his comfort level with Farnsworth as closer. "Valverde pitches a little differently than he does over the first four, five outings, there’s no reason he can’t be as effective as he was yesterday. Torres has been very good for us. The nice thing about Carlos is that he can go more than one inning typically. So we’ll see how it goes with Farnsworth. I like the variety of options we may have going forward. The key is for guys to get better and we’ll also see how things develop at Vegas."

The Mets will likely stick with Farnsworth as long as he remains productive. He has given up just one earned run in 8 1/3 innings while striking out six and walking two.
