Red Sox's Napoli still not satisfied despite strong outing Thursday
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli snapped a four-game hitless streak (0 for 14) with two hits, including one double, during Thursday's 8-6 loss to the Orioles. He also had two runs.

“Felt a little better (Thursday),” he said, per The Boston Herald. “I don’t know. I don’t want to really talk about it, to tell you the truth. Just going to work hard, keep grinding, go up there and try to give a tough at-bat every time.”

Napoli is batting .194 (14 for 72) with 25 strikeouts through 21 games in June.

Red Sox's Farrell: We're all a little surprised by Napoli's struggles
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli was held out of the starting lineup Wednesday against the Orioles following a four-strikeout performance Tuesday.

Napoli is hitless in his last three games (12 at-bats) and is batting .199 on the season. Manager John Farrell is shocked as anyone by Napoli's struggles in 2015.

“I think we’re all a little surprised,” Farrell said, per WEEI.com. “That’s not to say that Mike’s not working at it because he is. Coming off the spring, he looked free, he was getting some balls in the inside part of the plate where he was getting ahead out to the pull side and was driving the ball into right center field, which is where he true power is when you see him going well. With the exception of a smaller stint of time that’s really when he’s been in that approach.

“This is surprising. There’s going to be swing and miss, we know that with Mike. That’s part of his make up as a player, as a performer, with the power you’re going to get. You could also look to four years ago, there was a year similar to what is unfolding right now and that’s been a lower average, but a high number of home runs. We’re certainly not turning away from Mike, we’re here to help him get through it.”

Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli strikes out four times Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli had a rough night at the plate on Tuesday. The veteran went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts and three left-on-base in the 6-4 loss to the Orioles. After his fourth strikeout, the boobirds were calling from the stands at Fenway Park.

"A rough night for Mike," said Red Sox manager John Farrell, per MLB.com. "Some swing and miss there where he's had some decent success against Ubaldo Jimenez coming into tonight's game against him. Mike's working through, searching to gain any kind of consistency and right now, just a tough night tonight."

Napoli, whose average is now down to .199 on the season, hit in the eighth spot in the order on Tuesday, which was the first time he's done so since coming to Boston in 2013. But he will likely be on the bench for Wednesday's game against another right-hander, Bud Norris.

"We're looking at matchups for the remainder of the series, and particularly tomorrow against Norris," said Farrell. "Where even when Mike's done well, that's been a tough matchup for him so we'll put up a lineup that gives us a chance to match up as best we can."

Slumping Red Sox 1B Mike Napoli bats eighth on Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

For the first time since 2012, Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is batting eighth in the starting lineup on Tuesday. Napoli last started in the No. 8 slot when he was with the Rangers three years ago.

But the power-hitting first baseman has been in a bit of a funk at the plate in recent times. Over his last 10 games, Napoli is hitting .147 (5 for 34) with one home run and five RBI. So, he will slide down to the eighth spot in the order on Tuesday against the Orioles.
