Cliff Lee gets roughed up in loss to Giants
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee did not pitch well in his first start back from the disabled list Monday at home against the Giants. He allowed six runs and matched a career high with 12 hits allowed over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one in 90 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Lee has allowed 10-plus hits in three of his last 10 starts. He owns a 3.67 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP over 11 starts (73 2/3 innings). His next start will come Saturday at home against Arizona.

Cliff Lee's activation off DL among Phillies roster moves
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Phillies made a slew of roster moves before Monday's game against the Giants, which included activating starting pitcher Cliff Lee (elbow) off the 60-day disabled list.

The Phillies also activated infielder Reid Brignac (ankle) and catcher Wil Nieves (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list.

Outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. was designated for assignment, while infielder Cesar Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Catcher Koyie Hill was outrighted off the roster.

Cliff Lee to be 'pretty free' of restrictions in first start off DL
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said starting pitcher Cliff Lee, who is returning to the rotation Monday against the Giants after being sidelined two months with an elbow injury, will be "pretty free" of restrictions, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Amaro said Lee could throw 85-100 pitches in his first start off the disabled list.

"I expect him to be Cliff Lee," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He's pretty robotic when he goes out there and pitches. I don't think he was all that enthusiastic -- he doesn't see pitching in rehab games as something that's necessarily beneficial other than to get his work in. So I think he'll pitch fine. If he's healthy, he'll pitch fine."

Report: Phillies prefer to trade Cliff Lee, not Cole Hamels
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

The Phillies have a pair of veteran left-handed starters on big contracts whose names have swirled in trade rumors this season, but that doesn't mean they value them equally.

CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports Friday the team's preference is to move Cliff Lee ahead of Cole Hamels. Lee is recovering from an elbow injury but should be back in the next few weeks, and the team has a much lower asking price for him than Hamels at this point. Hamels is also considered more likely to utilize the no-trade clause in his contract than Lee, with both players having at least 20 teams they cannot be traded to without prior notification.

Hamels has a 2.93 ERA and 3-5 record on the season, while Lee was at 4-4 with a 3.18 mark prior to his injury, which has kept him out since mid-May. It is not clear at this point if any deal is imminent.

Can you trust in Cliff Lee?
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

After missing two months with a left elbow strain, Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee is set to return from the DL Monday, which is nothing less than good news in Fantasy. Still, his owners may have reason to feel uneasy about it, if only because he's returning from an elbow injury.

Granted, he had an MRI at the time of the injury that revealed only a strain, damage to the muscle, rather than a sprain, damage to the ligament, but with all the starting pitchers forced into Tommy John surgery this season after what seemed like lesser injuries at first, it's only natural to worry.

It's kind of like shopping for a used car. No one can say for sure if something will go wrong in the next week or two. All anyone can do is look out for the warning signs, and between the initial diagnosis and the way his rehabilitation is gone, I'm ready to buy into him again.

True, it was a much longer rehabilitation than most everyone anticipated, but at least we know he didn't rush back. And while his last rehab start was nothing short of ugly (which is hardly unusual for a pitcher as established as he is), he showed his usual velocity and pinpoint control during his three-start stint. No signs of lingering damage there.

I still rank Lee only 17th at starting pitcher right now just to be cautious, but I'd be willing to trade for him if the right opportunity presented itself.
