Several issues could keep Phillies from trading Cliff Lee
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Recent struggles on the mound, an injury history and a bulky salary will likely conspire to keep Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee from being traded, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lee has yielded nine runs on 21 hits in just 10 2/3 innings in his last two starts. Contending teams will be hard-pressed to trade top prospects for Lee until he regains the dominance that has marked much of his career. Lee will turn 36 on Aug. 30. His contract still calls for him to earn $45.5 after the trade deadline.

Equally disturbing is that Lee has surrendered 99 hits in 78 2/3 innings this season.

Cliff Lee gives up three runs vs. Diamondbacks
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee wasn't a factor in the decision Saturday after surrendering three earned runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings and striking out four in his team's 10-6 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Lee was hammered in his return to the rotation earlier in the week after missing more than two months with an elbow injury, but he was able to limit the damage Saturday despite a bevy of baserunners in the start. He owns a 3.78 ERA and 68:12 K:BB ratio in 78 2/3 innings. Lee is scheduled to face the Nationals Thursday.

Cliff Lee not a sure thing
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Before I say anything else, I want to point out that I currently rank Cliff Lee 23rd among starting pitchers, which means I would trade anyone ranked 24th or higher straight-up for him, including Jeff Samardzija, Anibal Sanchez, Alex Cobb and Jered Weaver. So when I say he's not a sure thing, understand I'm not saying he's washed up and doesn't deserve a spot on your roster. I'm simply noting that those who stuck with him throughout his two-month DL stint hoping he'd be an ace when he returned have reason to be concerned now.

On Tuesday's Fantasy Baseball Today, Al Melchior picked Lee as one of the starting pitchers who worry him in the second half, and though I didn't do the same, I certainly could have. I'm just not totally confident in the condition of his elbow.

It's probably an overreaction. You might even say a bad start after an extended layoff is to be expected, and if Lee dominates over eight innings next time out, all the hand-wringing we're doing now will seem like wasted energy. But for now, the doubts linger. Because the injury was a strain and not a sprain, Tommy John surgery should be off the table, but how do we know nothing else is going on in there? Can we be sure the injury had enough time to heal completely, or, as Al suggested, might the Phillies have rushed him back to market him at the trade deadline?

It all remains to be seen, but whether you own Cliff Lee or are looking to trade for him, you shouldn't be counting on him to save your season.

Cliff Lee gets roughed up in loss to Giants
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee did not pitch well in his first start back from the disabled list Monday at home against the Giants. He allowed six runs and matched a career high with 12 hits allowed over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one in 90 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Lee has allowed 10-plus hits in three of his last 10 starts. He owns a 3.67 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP over 11 starts (73 2/3 innings). His next start will come Saturday at home against Arizona.

Cliff Lee's activation off DL among Phillies roster moves
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Phillies made a slew of roster moves before Monday's game against the Giants, which included activating starting pitcher Cliff Lee (elbow) off the 60-day disabled list.

The Phillies also activated infielder Reid Brignac (ankle) and catcher Wil Nieves (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list.

Outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. was designated for assignment, while infielder Cesar Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Catcher Koyie Hill was outrighted off the roster.
