Royals' Jeremy Guthrie hammered for 11 runs vs. Yankees
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie took the loss on Monday, allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits and three walks in one-plus innings in his team's 14-1 loss to the Yankees.

Guthrie (4-3) hadn't given up more than two runs in any of his last three starts, but he could not keep runners off base or the ball in the park in the first inning, with eight runs scoring on a trio of home runs. He opened the second inning by putting two more guys on base before serving up his fourth home run of the game, which ended his day with just three outs recorded.

"I'm sure it was more than just command, but that was a part of it," Guthrie said to MLB.com. "Most of the damage they did was a credit to them. I don't know if they were good pitches, but they were executed [the way we planned them]."

Guthrie owns a 6.70 ERA and 19:16 K:BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings. He's slated to face the Cubs in Chicago on Sunday.

"For him to send me out [in the second inning] is a gesture of faith on his part," Guthrie said. "The game is probably over at that point, but he believes I can go out there and get more outs. But I wasn't able to do that or get deeper into the game."

Royals P Jeremy Guthrie pitches six scoreless innings in win
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie did not allow an earned run during Wednesday evening's 7-1 victory over the Reds.

Guthrie went six innings, struck out three batters and walked two. He now holds a 4.75 ERA for the season.

This was the first game of the season that Guthrie did not allow an earned run. He struggled early on this year but only gave up a total of four earned runs in his previous two games. He hasn't had a game where he's struck out more than three batters this year, however.

"I didn't have the same type of command I did a couple of starts ago," Guthrie said, per MLB.com. "But my location has been a bit better. I've been getting ahead of guys and making good pitches."

Guthrie's next start is projected for May 26 against the Yankees.

Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie goes five innings, gets win on Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie picked up his third win of the season on Thursday in a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. Guthrie lasted five innings, giving up two runs on six hits. He struck out one and didn't walk anyone. He threw 57 of his 94 pitches for strikes.

Both runs he surrendered came in the bottom of the fifth inning on RBI singles from Delino DeShields Jr. and Prince Fielder.

Thursday's performance lowered Guthrie's ERA to 5.44. He is scheduled to make his next start Wednesday against the Reds.

Royals' Jeremy Guthrie allows two runs in win vs. Tigers
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie earned a win Saturday, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings while striking out three in his team's 6-2 victory over the Tigers.

Guthrie (2-2) was staked to a 4-0 lead by the middle of the second inning, and was able to limit the opposition to a run on a sacrifice fly in the second and another on a triple in the sixth. It was the best outing of the season for Guthrie, who picks up his first win since his season debut.

"Today, I did know the importance of going deep into the game," Guthrie said. "I knew that Chris [Young] was going to be starting tomorrow and with all that's been going on, it has left the bullpen in a little dire straits."

Guthrie owns a 5.70 ERA and 14:11 K:BB ratio in 36 1.3 innings. He's slated to face the Rangers in Texas Thursday.

Royals' Jeremy Guthrie rocked for six runs vs. Tigers Sunday
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie took a loss Sunday, giving up six earned runs on 11 hits in six innings while striking out one in his team's 6-4 defeat against the Tigers.

While fellow starter Anibal Sanchez took his bid for a perfect game into the sixth inning, Guthrie (1-2), who was announced as the starter for Sunday at the last minute, was hit hard in the loss, giving up a run in the second inning, three on a bases-loaded single in the fourth and two more on a Miguel Cabrera home run in the fifth.

"Today I thought he threw the ball OK," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "You got to kind of give credit to the opposition. That's a really good team. Some of those pitches, they just found a way to go down and get the ball to the outfield."

Guthrie, who has yet to record a quality start this season, owns a 6.52 ERA and 11:10 K:BB ratio in 29 innings. After having his scheduled suffled Sunday, he's now on track to face the Tigers again next weeked, this time in Detroit.
