Rangers' Banister: First HR should give Fielder confidence boost
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder homered Tuesday at Arizona for the first time since May 8 last season.

"I'm just here to drive in runs," said Fielder, who missed most of last season due to neck surgery. "Home runs are great a way to drive in multiple runs at one time, but as long as I'm hitting the ball hard and driving in runs I'm doing my job."

Now that Fielder has his first home run out of the way, Rangers manager Jeff Banister is confident the home runs could now come in bunches.

"He really hasn't got a whole lot of balls back-spun in the air, but tonight he did," Banister said, per MLB.com. "I know that everyone is wanting to see the power. We've wanted to see the power. It showed up tonight. My guess is that this gives him the confidence. I know he has been looking for his first one, too. He got it under his belt and that will give him the confidence to let the barrel go."

Even with one home run, Fielder is still slugging .509 through 14 games. He is batting .386 and has nine multihit games.

"I keep saying it, he's gone 9 1/2 months without playing baseball," Banister said. "I'm more impressed with how he's been swinging the bat and driving the ball from gap to gap, beating the shift."

Rangers' Mitch Moreland likely on bench until Friday
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Rangers designated hitter Mitch Moreland likely won't be in the team's starting lineup for most of this week.

While Moreland has been bothered by loose bodies in his elbow, his benching isn't injury-related. The Rangers will be playing interleague games at Arizona, so the team won't be using a DH. Prince Fielder will be at first base for the games, per the Star Telegram

Rangers' Prince Fielder, Mitch Moreland to split DH duties this year
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Rangers first baseman Prince Fielder and designated hitter Mitch Moreland will be used interchangeably on defense this season, reports MLB.com. Fielder was slated as the designated hitter Sunday for the sixth time, one less than he's started at first.

"Prince Fielder is our first baseman and Mitch Moreland plays first base," manager Jeff Banister said. "I will use both as needed. I see both players playing. I haven't seen enough of Mitch to evaluate his defense but I'm going to continue to play both at first base and both will get time at DH."

Banister wants to avoid Fielder becoming exclusively a DH.

"His energy level and who he is, we want to keep him engaged," Banister said. "DH is a challenging spot to perform in anyway if you're used to being in the field. The ability to play defense and stay engaged creates an energy. I don't want any of these guys [being a full-time DH] unless we find a David Ortiz-type of guy."

Mitch Moreland out of Rangers lineup on Sunday
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Rangers designated hitter Mitch Moreland was not in the team's starting lineup for Sunday's game. Moreland has a sore elbow and hasn't played since April 15.

Prince Fielder will be the Rangers' designated hitter on Sunday, moving from first base. Adam Rosales got the start at first, batting sixth in the lineup.
