Cubs SP Dan Haren doomed by one bad inning in loss to Giants
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Dan Haren's struggles with the Cubs continued on Thursday. The right-hander did not fare well in his start against the Giants, allowing five runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four in the 9-1 Cubs' loss.

Haren (8-9, 3.90 ERA) was given an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but he allowed the Giants to tie the game in the bottom half. The big inning came in the third, when the Giants tacked on four more, including a three-run home run by Marlon Byrd.

The 6 1/3 innings represents Haren's longest outing since joining the Cubs at the July 31 trade deadline. In five starts with the Cubs, Haren is 1-2 with a 6.33 ERA.

Cubs' Dan Haren endures another rough outing on Saturday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Cubs starter Dan Haren was unable to pitch deep into his outing against the Braves on Saturday. The veteran right-hander allowed four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk, but he needed 64 pitches before being pulled from the game.

Haren was given an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but he immediately coughed up the lead by giving up a two-run home run to Nick Swisher in the top of the second. He settled in after that, while his teammates regained a 3-2 lead. But things fell apart for Haren in the fifth inning.

He retired the first batter of the inning, but he allowed the next two batters to reach and was lifted from the game at that point. The bullpen permitted those two runners, plus three more, to score. Haren would get a no-decision, as the Cubs wound up winning the game 9-7.

Haren has now made four starts since being acquired by the Cubs at the trade deadline. He has yet to pitch more than 5 1/3 innings in any of those outings, and he owns a 6.06 ERA as a member of the Cubs.

Cubs SP Dan Haren has shaky debut with new team Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Cubs right-hander Dan Haren did not have a very strong debut with his new team on Wednesday. Haren gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out three in the 7-5 loss to the Pirates.

Haren got off to a shaky start, as he allowed two runs in the first inning, including a lead-off home run by Gregory Polanco. He gave up another solo home run to Andrew McCutchen in the third, with another run crossing in the fifth.

Haren was left with a no-decision in this one, as the Cubs were able to tie the game--though they would wind up taking the loss late in the game.

He had gone exactly six innings in each of his previous five starts, all with the Marlins. Still, he has allowed more than three earned runs just once since the end of June.
