Royals' Jeremy Guthrie stays in rotation; Chris Young odd man out
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

The Royals will make a tweak to their starting rotation as they aim to make another deep postseason run this year.

Starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie (7-7) will keep his spot in the rotation, while Chris Young (8-6) will head to the bullpen as the odd man out, according to The Kansas City Star.

Neither have been especially sharp as of late -- Young has a 5.11 ERA with 11 walks and seven home runs allowed in his last five starts; Guthrie sports a 5.58 ERA with nine walks and five home runs allowed in his previous five outings.

Royals SP Chris Young takes loss against Cardinals on Thursday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Royals starter Chris Young was bitten by the longball in his outing against the Cardinals on Thursday. The veteran right-hander allowed four runs in just three innings. He gave up five hits and a walk while striking out a batter, needing 68 pitches to get through the third.

Young, who drops to 8-6 on the year, was staked to an early 2-0 lead in this one. But a pair of two-run homers (Randal Grichuk in the second inning and Matt Carpenter in third) was Young's undoing in the 4-3 loss.

Young got off to a blazing start this season, posting a 2.11 ERA over his first eight starts. But things have gone down-hill since then. Over his last seven starts, he has a 5.50 ERA.

Royals SP Chris Young improves to 8-5 in win over White Sox
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Royals starting pitcher Chris Young allowed two runs on three hits and four walks in five innings during a 4-2 win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the White Sox. He struck out four.

Young held Chicago off the scoreboard until Geovany Soto led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to tie the game at 1.

The veteran right-hander allowed a two-out solo home run to Adam Eaton in the bottom of the fifth inning, which tied the game at 2. However, the Royals went ahead in the top of the sixth inning, which allowed Young to pick up the win and improve to 8-5.

Young won for the first time in four July starts.

Royals to open second half with Chris Young, Edinson Volquez
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

Royals manager Ned Yost said Sunday he will go with pitchers Chris Young and Edinson Volquez during the day-night doubleheader against the White Sox on Friday, reports MLB.com.

Yost added that he was comfortable with his rotation moving forward into the second half of the season.

"I don't need to see much improvement because I'm the one who is dictating how far they go," Yost. "I've taken these guys out of games after the sixth inning when they obviously could have gone farther because we have such a dynamic bullpen."
