Angels' Mike Scioscia expects 'a big year' from C.J. Wilson
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday he's expecting a big rebound season from pitcher C.J. Wilson, MLB.com reports.

"I think he's throwing the ball as well as I've seen him throw it, which brings you back to either the start of last year or a couple years ago," Scioscia said. "I think that a lot of the second-half issues -- from the health to consistency to release point -- have been resolved. I look for a big year from C.J."

Wilson had posted no worse than a 3.83 ERA in his first four seasons working as a starting pitcher after a career in his bullpen but struggled in 2014, going 13-10 with a 4.51 ERA and 151:85 K:BB ratio in 175 2/3 innings. He's allowed eight runs (three earned) in 11 2/3 innings this spring while striking out seven and walking six.

Angels pitcher Andrew Heaney likely to be sent to Triple-A
by Ted Leshinski | Staff Writer

Angels manager Mike Scioscia has indicated that pitcher Andrew Heaney will begin the season in Triple-A, according to MLB.com.

The team's top pitching prospect, Heaney has allowed 13 earned runs in 14.0 innings (8.36 ERA) in four starts this spring.

The Angels are expected to open the season with a four-man rotation that will included Jered Weaver, Matt Shoemaker, C.J. Wilson and Hector Santiago.

Starter Garrett Richards is recovering from knee surgery.

"One of the things is, a lot of guys who are playing well, it might come down to what the fit is on the team. So there's a couple different ways," Scioscia said. "There's some things that might happen that might affect somebody's standing on the team in a positive or negative way, just to get the whole roster to be as deep as you can."

Angels 'most likely' to start year with four starting pitchers
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Angels manager Mike Scioscia thinks he will start the season with a short staff, reports MLB.com. The team will "most likely" start the year with four starters in the rotation and 12 pitchers overall, Scioscia said Sunday.

The expected starters would be Jered Weaver, Matt Shoemaker, C.J. Wilson and Hector Santiago with Garrett Richards still recovering from knee surgery.

"One of the things is, a lot of guys who are playing well, it might come down to what the fit is on the team. So there's a couple different ways," Scioscia said. "There's some things that might happen that might affect somebody's standing on the team in a positive or negative way, just to get the whole roster to be as deep as you can."

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson looking for consistency with changeup
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson, who returned to the mound Sunday, is pushing to throw a more consistent changeup in 2014, reports MLB.com.

"If you throw 20 percent changeups, what happens to your elbow? Nothing," Wilson said. "I can go out there and try to throw all sliders, but what's that going to do to my elbow? I don't know; I don't want to find out. But it's probably not good. Guys that are serial cutter-ists as starters and throw a ton of sliders, and throw the ball as hard as they can, they have shorter life spans."

Wilson used the changeup to get out of a few jams Sunday.

"It bailed me out of a couple jams, got me a couple swing-throughs," said Wilson, who also struck out two in a 64-pitch outing. "It's a big pitch."
