A little luck helps Padres RHP James Shields gain win Friday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Padres ace James Shields lifted his ERA from 2.08 to 2.84 on Friday, but he's shedding no tears. He raised his record to 2-0 with a strong outing amid great fanfare against the host Cubs.

Surrounding the hoopla of the major league debut of Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, Shields struck him out three times and emerged with a victory despite two difficult innings.

"I didn't have the greatest stuff today. I wasn't locating as well as I wanted to; I was behind in the count all day," Shields said, per MLB.com.

Shields was his own worst enemy in a two-run third with a throwing error and wild pitch, then allowed a pair in the fifth on four consecutive hits. But he retired the next five and got lucky when the Padres scored three runs in the sixth.

"It's one of those days where you grind through it," Shields said.

He will try to be a bit steadier next Wednesday at Colorado.

Padres pitcher James Shields strikes out seven in win Saturday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields went seven strong innings in Saturday's 10-2 win over the Giants. Shields allowed one run on three hits, including one home run, and seven strikeouts in his start.

Shields only blemish came in the fourth inning when Joaquin Arias hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. Shields settled in after that, allowing just one hit in his final three innings. He also lowered his ERA to 2.08 on the year.

Shields will look to keep rolling Friday against the Cubs.

Padres P James Shields strikes out eight in loss to Dodgers
by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields struck out eight batters in a 6-3 loss against the Dodgers on Opening Day.

''It was pretty surreal for me, being able to pitch here after growing up down the street. But once I got into the bullpen, I was nice and relaxed,'' he said. ''Any time you're facing Kershaw, it's going to be a tough game and a tough battle. You can't make too many mistakes because you know he's not going to make too many mistakes. But for the most part, I felt we did pretty well.''

Shields gave up two earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in six innings pitched. One of his hits given up was a home run by Adrian Gonzalez.

Padres' Shields tosses three scoreless innings in spring finale
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields allowed three hits and no walks in three scoreless innings while striking out two in his team's 8-2 win over the White Sox Wednesday.

"Three innings was kind of the ideal, I think I ended up throwing 30-35 [pitches]. I think I got some good work in today. I felt really good in my delivery today. Overall, my body felt really good. I'm ready to go," Shields said after the outing, per MLB.com.

Shields has alternated scoreless outings with mediocre appearances over his last four games but was able to end spring on a high note.

"He felt as though he's in a good spot," manager Bud Black said. "I thought his fastball had life to it, he had good location, threw some devastating changeups and some good cutters. He pounded the strike zone."

Shields finishes the Cactus League season with a 2.79 ERA and 23:5 K:BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings. He'll square off with the Dodgers Monday on Opening Day.

It will be Shields' seventh Opening Day start and fourth straight. He started the opener four times for the Rays and each of the last two seasons for the Royals before signing with the Padres as an offseason free agent.

Shields was 1-1 with a 3.31 ERA in five starts this spring.
