Agent: James Shields never received five-year, $110M offer
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Agent Page Odle, who represents starting pitcher James Shields, denied the report his client was offered a five-year, $110 million contract before he accepted the Padres' four-year, $75 million offer, per FOX Sports.com.

"James Shields never received, nor did he reject, a five-year, $110 million offer by some sort of mystery team," Odle said. "We never had an offer like that. We never received an offer like that. That was completely inaccurate and a fabrication.

"We had scenarios talking to teams in the three-year, four-year and five-year range from the start. James never demanded a five-year deal. Would James have liked a five-year deal? Of course. Why wouldn't he? But there was never that demand."

Shields told a San Diego radio station Thursday that his final decision was between the Cubs and Padres. CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reported Monday the Cubs offered Shields a three-year deal, which included a vesting option, late in the process. However, Heyman said the Cubs weren't going to be able to offer Shields a deal in the mid-$70-million range after spending $175 million on starting pitchers this offseason.

"At the beginning of the offseason, I'm watching the moves [general manager A.J. Preller] was making, and it's incredible the change and the willingness to win," Shields said during his introductory press conference with San Diego. "It's the fact that this organization is ready to win now, and that's what attracted me to the San Diego Padres."

Shields: Cubs were in final two before signing deal with Padres
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Starting pitcher James Shields, who joined San Diego on a four-year, $75 million contract, said during a radio interview Thursday his decision came down to the Padres and Cubs, according to U-T San Diego. Shields' deal with San Diego also includes a team option for 2019.

The Marlins also offered Shields a three-year deal and a vesting option, per Heyman.

Padres announce four-year deal with pitcher James Shields
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

The Padres made it official Wednesday, announcing they've signed free-agent pitcher James Shields to a four-year contract with a team option for 2019. The deal is reportedly worth $75 million.

CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports the deal does not include a no-trade clause.

Shields, 33, went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA in 34 starts for the Royals last season. He's the only pitcher in the majors throw at least 225 innings each of the last four years.

Shields picked San Diego over offers from the Cubs and Marlins, according to Heyman.

Marlins, Cubs offers not enough to land James Shields
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Marlins and Cubs both made offers to pitcher James Shields before the veteran pitcher agreed to a four-year deal with the Padres, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

Heyman reports the Cubs offered Shields a three-year deal, which included a vesting option, late in the free-agent process. The Marlins also offered Shields a three-year deal and a vesting option.

Shields' deal with the Padres also includes an option year.

Padres, James Shields agree on four-year, $75M range
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirms a report the Padres have agreed on a four-year deal with pitcher James Shields.

The deal's worth $75 million and includes an option for a fifth season. Shields still needs to take a physical, which will likely push back the official announcement for a few days.

The 33-year-old is coming off a season in which he posted a 3.21 ERA over 227 innings.

The move completes the Padres overhaul this offseason. The team completely revamped in the outfield, adding Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and Wil Myers. Catcher Derek Norris and third baseman Will Middlebrooks also joined the club via trades.

Shields will join Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross and Ian Kennedy at the top of San Diego's rotation.

SB Nation first reported the Shields-Padres agreement.
