Padres SP James Shields posts quality start, takes loss Tuesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Padres right-hander James Shields did his part to keep his club in the game on Tuesday, but ultimately the Padres were shutout 4-0 by the Mets. Shields allowed three runs on seven hits over seven-plus innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter, but he was out-pitched by the youngster Noah Syndergaard.

Shields (8-4, 3.77 ERA) allowed a two-run home run to Lucas Duda in the first inning. He was able to settle in and keep the Mets off the board over the next six innings.

But he allowed a double to lead off the eight and was subsequently removed from the game. Shawn Kelley entered and immediately served up a two-run home run to Curtis Granderson, with the first run being charged to Shields.

Shields is 2-4 over his last six starts, but he owns a 2.50 ERA over that stretch.

Padres want to move pitchers James Shields, Andrew Cashner
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

The Padres are very much willing to part ways with pitchers James Shields and Andrew Cashner as the trade deadline looms, according to ESPN.com.

San Diego is apparently very active in the trade market and it "really [wants] to move" both Shields and Cashner.

Casner (3-10) has a 4.10 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 34 walks in 109 2/3 innings this season. Shields has an impressive 8-3 records with a 3.77 ERA. He has 144 strikeouts and 47 walks in 126 2/3 innings.

Padres SP James Shields blanks Giants over five, but wild again
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Padres starter James Shields pitched well Wednesday against San Francisco - he just didn't go long enough to prevent a meltdown by the bullpen that cost him a win.

Shields tossed five shutout innings, but was removed after throwing 96 pitches. He allowed three hits and three walks while fanning seven. But the relievers gave up seven runs thereafter.

"I was still good to go," he told MLB.com. "I've been in that situation a few times in my career. I definitely had more in the tank. But it's not my decision. It's our manager's decision."

Shields has failed to register a quality start over his last three outings. He has walked 11 during that stretch, which has contributed greatly to his short starts.

Padres SP James Shields not sharp, but gets win on Friday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Padres starter James Shields labored in his first outing following the All-Star break, but he was able to come away with his eighth win of the season.

The veteran right-hander limited the Rockies to one run on seven hits over five innings on Friday. Shields walked four and struck out six, needing 100 pitches to make it through the fifth. The outing did lower his ERA to 3.92, but he struggled with his command for much of the evening.

However, the only run he wound up allowing was a solo home run by Charlie Blackmon in the fifth inning.

Shields (8-3) has a 2.63 ERA over his last four starts.

Padres set rotation for second half
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

The Padres will turn to pitcher James Shields to open the second half of the season Friday against the Rockies, reports MLB.com. Shields will be followed by Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Ian Kennedy and Odrisamer Despaigne.

"It's a new beginning," interim manager Pat Murphy said. "An opportunity to get everybody recuperated and come back… It's a little disruption of their work, their rhythm, but more for Cashner, Kennedy and Despy than Shields."
