Padres P James Shields goes 7 strong innings in win
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields stayed unbeaten with another solid performance in Sunday afternoon's 11-3 win over the Dodgers.

Shields did give up three earned runs, two of which came on an Alex Guerrero bomb in the seventh inning. Up until that point, Shields pitched a great game, with everything in hand thanks to the Padres' run support.

Shields has now allowed only six earned runs over his past three games. He struck out seven batters and walked one in seven full innings. Shields now has an ERA of 3.75 for the season.

His next start is projected for Friday against the Pirates.

Padres pitcher James Shields using his curveball at high rate
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields used his curveball at an astonishing rate in his outing on Tuesday. The veteran tossed 43 curveballs of his 107 pitches in his appearance, something he's made a point to use more this season, according to U-T San Diego.

"I think I've kind of locked it in," said Shields. "The last few years, I haven't really had my curveball. I think the beginning of the season, I kind of figured some things out, what I was doing with my curveball. Now I have it, and I feel like I have all my weapons right now."

Shields has thrown a curveball on 23 percent of his pitches so far this season.

"It's tight, it's got good break in the hitting area," Padres manager Bud Black said. "There's not a lot of guys who throw a true curve, the 12-6 or the overspin breaking ball. You see a lot of sliders, you see some cutters, you see slurves, but you don't see the old-school, traditional curve. Guys just don't see it a lot, so it's a little hard to hit."

Padres' James Shields whiffs 11, serves up two HRs in no-decision
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Although Padres pitcher James Shields put together another double-digit strikeout effort on Tuesday, he was unable to factor into the decision at home against the Cubs.

Shields was dominant throughout most of the night, but surrendered solo home runs to Chris Coghlan and Dexter Fowler in third inning, respectively. He was charged with two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out 11 over seven innings of an 4-3 victory. Of his 107 pitches, 71 were strikes.

Shields has struck out 20 and allowed only three earned runs over his last two starts (13 innings). He will look to stay dominant Sunday in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

Padres' James Shields strikes out nine in win vs. Mariners
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields earned a win on Wednesday, giving up just one earned run on six hits and three walks in six innings while striking out nine in his team's 4-2 victory over the Mariners.

Shields (5-0) wasn't efficient in the outing, throwing 115 pitches in his six innings of action, but he was much improved after giving up five earned runs in each of his last two starts (both also wins). His only damage came on a fifth-inning home run served up to Brad Miller.

Shields owns a 3.91 ERA and 64:15 K:BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings. He's lined up to face the Cubs at home Tuesday.

Padres SP James Shields allows four home runs in Friday's start
by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com

Padres pitcher James Shields allowed five runs on six hits over six innings of work during Friday's 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.

Despite his struggles, Shields earned his fourth win of the season. Shields struck out seven batters and walked three during the start. His biggest mistakes were four solo home runs he surrendered to Chris Owings, A.J. Pollock, Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta. As a result, his ERA rose from 3.72 to 4.25.

Shields (4-0) has now given up seven home runs and 10 runs in his last two starts. His next expected start is scheduled for Thursday against the Nationals.
