James Shields knocked around against Yankees
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher James Shields was knocked around Monday against the Yankees.

Shields allowed six runs on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three during the outing. Shields ran into some trouble in the third and fourth innings, giving up a run in each frame. He really struggled in the seventh, though. Shields allowed a home run to the lead off man to open the seventh. He then put two men on with singles. After getting the first out, Shields gave up two run-scoring singles to the next two batters. The sixth and final run came across on a sac fly. Shields was replaced after he walked Carlos Beltran with two outs in the seventh inning.

With the loss, Shields dropped to 12-7. He’ll take on the Indians in his next start.

James Shields turns in a strong start Tuesday
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher James Shields turned in a strong start Tuesday against the Rockies.

Shields gave up two runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked one during the outing. Shields proved to be hittable early on. After giving up two singles to open the game, Shields induced a run-scoring double-play. Nolan Arenado would also single during the frame, but Shields was able to work around it. Arenado would come back to haunt Shields in the fifth, hitting a solo home run to left center. Shields threw 94 pitches during the start.

With the win, Shields improved the 12-6. He’ll take on the Yankees in his next start.

James Shields only average in win over Oakland
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Right-hander James Shields managed his worst performance in his last eight outings Thursday, but still managed a quality start that helped keep the Royals in first place.

Shields took a 3-1 lead into the sixth against the Athletics, but surrendered an RBI triple to Josh Reddick and run-scoring single to Alberto Callaspo before being removed. He finished having yielded three earned runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He had given up just four earned runs in his last 30 innings pitched.

His next start is slated for Tuesday in Colorado.

James Shields spins complete-game shutout vs. Giants
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Royals pitcher James Shields went the distance Saturday, giving up four hits and one walk in nine scoreless innings and striking out five in his team's 5-0 win over the Giants.

It was the first complete-game shutout for Shields (11-6) sine September 2012. The closest the Giants came to causing trouble was a leadoff double in the eighth inning, which was also the only extra-base hit Shields allowed. He owns a 3.25 ERA and 132:34 K:BB ratio in 166 1/3 innings. Shields is scheduled to face the A's Thursday.
