Girardi 'surprised' that Yankees SS Stephen Drew remains cold
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Joe Girardi is maintaing his patience in hopes that Yankees shortstop Stephen Drew will come around at the plate.

Drew recently managed a five-game hitting streak, but with no multi-hit performances. He is 0-for-8 in his last two games as his slash line on the season has been weakened to .176/.271/.353.

"I watch his at-bats and I just feel that he's about to go off on a hot streak," Girirdi told the Journal News. "He gets a few hits one day, and it just hasn't happened, which I'm surprised. I really am surprised. I thought he had a good spring training. He's had some big hits for us, but it hasn't necessarily carried over into his average for us this year, but I think he's going to hit."

Yankees' Stephen Drew starts at third base on Wednesday
by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer

Stephen Drew is in the starting lineup at third base and batting seventh for the Yankees on Wednesday against the Rays. This will be Drew's first appearance at third base in his career. This comes on the heels of manager Joe Girardi claiming that Drew would be the primary backup option to Chase Headley at the hot corner.

Indeed, Headley is out of the lineup on Wednesday while Drew mans third base. Drew has struggled offensively this year, owning a dismal .184/.281/.367 batting line.

Jose Pirela is starting at second base, while Didi Gregorius is at shortstop

Yankees' Stephen Drew to backup 3B, A-Rod to DH only
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

The Yankees are preparing to use Stephen Drew as their primary backup third baseman instead of Alex Rodriguez, according to the New York Daily News

This could signal the end of Rodriguez playing the hot corner for the Yankees. Sure, he may get an appearance here or there. But it looks like the Yankees are content with keeping Rodriguez as their designated hitter.

"We're just thinking of keeping him at DH mostly," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Rodriguez is hitting .244/.348/.423 with seven home runs this season.

Yankees' Jose Pirela in Friday's lineup against Orioles
by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Yankees infielder Jose Pirela is back in the lineup and will play second base against the Orioles on Friday.

This will be Pirela's second game of the season as he played Wednesday as well. He took Thursday off with Stephen Drew starting at second. Manager Joe Girardi said Drew will take Friday and Saturday off, according to ESPN New York

Pirela recently came off the disabled list following his recovery from a right hand contusion.

Against the Orioles, Pirela will bat eighth.

The rest of the Yankees lineup is unchanged from Thursday.

Yankees continue to show faith in Stephen Drew
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

Even with the addition of Jose Pirela to the roster, Yankees second baseman Stephen Drew's starting job is safe, despite a slow start offensively.

“We’re going to keep running him out there,” manager Joe Girardi said of Drew, per the New York Post. “We look at at-bats. We look really deep into it. It’s not just what his average is. It’s ‘Is he being productive?’ We know he’s [struggled] the last 20 at-bats, but that happens to a lot of hitters. I thought he’s hit the ball much better than the luck he’s had.”

Drew seemed to reward Girardi's faith in a 4-3 win Thursday against the Orioles. He had a double and walk in the victory.

“Earlier on, I had good at-bats and nothing to show for it,” Drew said after getting on base twice. “Hopefully, I’ll start working up the middle again and the numbers take care of themselves.”

General manager Brian Cashman also came to Drew's defense Thursday.

“I thought he had a good spring toward the end of spring training,” Cashman said. “He’s been struggling more recently. He’s playing good defense, with some power and walks. But the hits haven’t been falling for him.”
