Twins' Phil Hughes: Struggles in Wednesday's spring start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hughes gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two home runs over two innings in Wednesday's loss to Houston.

Hughes struggled at the start of spring training but was coming off a good outing before this clunker. His spring ERA rose to 6.75. However, his numbers may not be that important since he's a veteran with a set spot in the rotation as the No. 2 or No. 3 starter. It's more important that Hughes is healthy at this point in the spring after an injury-plagued 2016 season. Hughes is returning from season-ending surgery in July to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome where part of his rib was removed to relieve nerve pressure on his shoulder.

Twins' Phil Hughes: Impressive outing in Friday's spring start
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hughes threw five scoreless innings with four strikeouts while allowing just one walk and two hits in Friday's win over Tampa Bay.

Hughes had given up seven runs in nine innings in his last three spring outings, so this is an encouraging sign. Hughes had said he was working on pitches and wasn't worried about his early performance. Hughes is returning after season-ending surgery to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome in July; part of his rib was removed to relieve nerve pressure on his shoulder. He looks healthy this spring and should begin the season as the No.2 or No. 3 starter.

Twins' Phil Hughes: Signs of progress despite poor spring results
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hughes gave up four runs over five innings Sunday as his spring ERA rose to 7.00. However, he focused on adding a changeup back to his repertoire and feels healthy. "Overall I was pleased with the progress I have been making on the command, and I feel my velocity is coming back," he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Hughes touched 92 mph with his fastball Sunday which is encouraging as his average fastball velocity has declined from 92 mph to 90 mph the last three seasons. Velocity and health are more important than results for Hughes this spring as he's got a set spot in the rotation. Hughes is returning after season-ending surgery to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome in July, where part of his rib was removed to relieve nerve pressure on his shoulder.

Twins' Phil Hughes: More comfortable after second spring outing
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Hughes gave up a run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout over two innings in his second spring training outing in Thursday's tie with Baltimore. "I felt a lot more comfortable," Hughes told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Compared to last time, it was miles better."

Hughes has given up three runs and seven hits in four innings this spring with one strikeout. However, his numbers hardly matter as he mostly needs to show he's healthy after season-ending surgery to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome in July, where part of his rib was removed to relieve nerve pressure on his shoulder. When healthy, he's shown outstanding control with the Twins, but his velocity has declined sharply the last two seasons.

Twins' Phil Hughes: First outing since July surgery
by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com

Hughes gave up two runs over two innings with four hits allowed in his spring debut Saturday. It was his first game since season-ending surgery to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome in July. "Felt like it had been 8 1/2 months," Hughes told MLB.com.

While Hughes' numbers were not great, it was encouraging to see him pitch without any health concerns. Hughes had a rib under his right shoulder blade removed during the surgery and later said he'd been experiencing discomfort since 2015. He also suffered a broken leg from a batted ball in July and a later examination revealed the shoulder issue. With all the injuries , Hughes struggled and finished with a 5.95 ERA last season. If he can stay healthy, Hughes could be a bounce-back candidate thanks to his stellar control.
