Phil Hughes lasts eight innings in win vs. Orioles
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes picked up a win Monday, giving up three unearned runs on five hits in eight innings and striking out five in his team's 6-4 victory over the Orioles.

Hughes (15-9) served up a three-run home run with two outs in the seventh after an error had been committed earlier in the inning. The pitcher ended a string of quality starts in his last outing but bounced back nicely on Labor Day. Hughes owns a 3.54 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 157:15 K:BB ratio in 180 2/3 innings. Since 1900, only two pitchers have qualified for the ERA title while posting a K:BB ratio of 10.0 or better (Bret Saberhagen, 1994; Cliff Lee, 2010). Hughes will look to remain on track to join that group when he faces the Angels Saturday.

Keep the faith with Phil Hughes
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Phil Hughes was cruising along Wednesday at Kansas City until the Royals rallied for six runs, the first four off him, in the eighth inning. As a result, Hughes didn't meet the criteria for a quality start, but that doesn't mean he wasn't quality.

Of course, considering he allowed just one earned run in each of his previous four starts, winning all of them, Fantasy owners probably don't need to be convinced of his utility by now, but as has been the case in just about all of his poor starts this year, home runs weren't the cause of his downfall Wednesday, as they were so many times in his days with the Yankees. He didn't allow any in that start and has allowed just three in his last 10 -- four of which were less than quality.

As Al Melchior has pointed out time and time again, Hughes has become the strike-throwingest (well, how would you put it?) starting pitcher in the majors this year -- and by a wide margin. Between that and his dramatically reduced home run rate, you wonder how he's ever less than quality.

For all the success he's had this year, you could argue he's been unlucky still.

Phil Hughes loses it late against Royals
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes lost it late in the game Wednesday.

Hughes allowed four runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out four and did not issue any walks. Hughes was exceptional over the first seven innings. He gave up just two hits during those first seven innings. Things fell apart in the eighth. Hughes gave up two singles to start the inning. He was able to induce a pop out for the first out, but couldn’t pull it together. Hughes gave up singles to the next three batters. He was pulled after giving up two runs. Both runners Hughes left on base wound up scoring, and were charged to Hughes.

With the loss, Hughes dropped to 14-9. He’ll take on the Orioles in his next start.

Phil Hughes wins fourth straight
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes twirled yet another gem Thursday, in a 4-1 win over the Indians, his fourth straight.

Hughes allowed just one run for the fourth start in a row, while completing seven full innings yet again. He scattered five hits without walking a batter, and struck out eight over 97 pitches for the win.

Hughes improved his record to 14-8 with the win, while lowering his ERA to 3.65. He will try to stretch his winning streak to five starts when he takes on the Royals Wednesday.

Phil Hughes excellent against Kansas City
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes turned in an excellent start against the Royals Saturday.

Hughes allowed one run on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six and did not issue any walks during the outing. Hughes was tagged for his only run in the fourth inning. After giving up a leadoff double, catcher Kurt Suzuki made a throwing error on a steal attempt, allowing the run to score. Hughes wound up throwing 94 pitches during the start.

With the win, Hughes improved to 13-8. He’ll make his next start against the Indians.
